Default Late to the party and yet totally underdressed...

Well, this evening, at 46 years of age, I am spinning my very first piece of vinyl, EVER. To say that I am a novice at this would be the ultimate understatement, as you will see. My F-117 Nighthawk phono stage finally arrived, this afternoon, so I was ready to go...only one problem...well, two, actually...what in the world are gain & load? Not knowing, I simply approached this with the "Hmmm, maybe it came with the right settings from Ray Samuels?" philosophy. So, I charged & plugged in the F-117 & started to listen...if that's what you can call it. The sound had all the dynamics of speakers in a wet paper bag while I'm wearing earmuffs! Instantly, I switched over to the "Okay, this couldn't have come with the right settings from the factory!" camp...I'd better do a little research. After a quick web search and thanks to Robert Harley's "Taking the Guesswork out of Phonostage Gain" article, I was halfway there with properly set gain. Following a little more digging (and a DUH moment, or two), I discovered that cartridges have recommended load resistances...where's my copy of "Analog for Dummies"? :sorry: Anyhow, a click over to the Ortofon page yielded the necessary info, and I dialed the Nighthawk to the appropriate setting... WOW...THERE is the sound! I was thrilled...absolutely thrilled. We'll see where this leads, but, for now, I simply want to sit back and enjoy the vinyl experience. My first full LP, ever, is Valerie Carter - Wild Child which I came across by reviewing the threads, here...so thanks to each and every one of you for the invitation to this party.

Robert

Congrats Robert. These AA guys throw one heck of a party and, regardless of which route you take to get there, they will be with you every step of the way. I have never seen a question on this site go unanswered. Advice and excitement flow freely here and we all love spending someone else's money. Most of my system and accesories are based on the advice I have received from this group. Enjoy the vinyl and the Nighthawk and Dan's full coverage of Santa's Helpers.

Robert, congrats on your first analog experience. There are quite a few of us here that decided to take that leap into the dark side recently. Once you experience a properly set up analog rig, it is hard to live without it and not to think about upgrades. I am sure this is just the beginning for you as well.

The words "Dan.... full coverage... and Santa's Helpers" don't all belong in the same sentence!

I'm glad you found the solution to the problem. Enjoy!
