Hello all. Sorry for posting just picture last night, I was using laptop to post picture and went to bed. posting pic from iPad lower quality a lot.
Before I tell you how I feel I have to make it clear first. 1. I am not buying yet. these are demo pair, they came with optional high gloss frame and wrong wood for me. 2. Yes, correct. I will use them as a side surround channel for 7.1 system. http://www.audioaficionado.org/magic...se-q7-scc.html 3. I don't know how long have they been in use, but dealer confirmed already broken in 4. the set up was very sub-optimal. they need two same power cords, I only have Transparent MM2x on hand to do this and they were too short so Montis were not in a place I like them to be. I wanted to pull them out more and widen them further apart, but I will not move those Q7 out just to do this. OK now ! 1. short answer for you yes Q7 are better speakers. 2. and yes, not 20X better. no where nearly. and don't forget how much each X cost. 3. ok ,now the sound, surprisingly, as a surround where they were 9 meters apart and placed side way of listening seat, they were very beaming. moving my head made upper mid to high to change in tonal a lot. until I learn how to toe them in toward rear wall and using flashlight technique of Martin Logan that I got an enveloping sound. Now using as a 2-ch stereo pair they were not beaming at all and sweet spot was wide enough for2-3 people. -Soundstage was so huge and surround sound-like even with casual set up. they were Fantastic and have Q7 challenged. -bass, surprise !, a lot more punch than Q7's. more kick. almost as deep, but after a few minutes, I know when compared to Q7's bass, Montis bass had a more muddy sound that was no where nearly as clean as that of Q7. If you see construction of Montis bass cabinet vs Q7 and you will understand why. Montis cabinet structure , frankly speaking, is like a 500$-class standalone sub's. But without direct comparision or without hearing Magico before, I will be totally satisfied with Montis's fun bass. the reason of punchier bass was solely from the fact that Montis has its own classs-D amp+DSP inside, and I think that is the character of internal amp that has faster sound and higher damping factor than Gryphon's Class A designs. - mid/high this was the area where Montis really shines. So clear , so transparent, even more so than Q7's. this is really what we call box-less, it's true. Everything sounded so clear, detail was outstanding. Never heard something so sharp, so clear.. but again Q7's voice was on another level regarding smoothness and naturalness. this was clearly heard instantly, may be Q7 made rounder sound overall and my wife just said on one song that Q7 made her think of MBL 101E sound, I didn't know what she mean, but that's what she said. - Over all, at the price of $9995 ? I wouldn't hesitate at all if I have to use Montis as my main speakers, I love them. - Will I buy it ? probably, but not until my dealer send the Ethos for me to try too. I believe for surround sound channel, Montis may be overkill. Ethos might do it just fine. and when the time is right I will order either Montis or Ethos + a pair of BF212 sub+ a pair of ElectroMotion R in-ceiling for back channel. this will completely replace the 15 years old Definitive Technology on the back and adding subs to my system. - the reason I am not interested in an Magico for surround has been explained in other post here. S5 just didn't work, didn't shine in this application as surround ch. I loose 70% of it's capability using them as a surround. May be amp and cables were not suitable while Martin Logan worked wonderfully there. and you don't worry that 0.2 ohm thing at 20Khz, it is just a spec.. it will not cause any problem in real world. - Montis is now favorite speakers along with Salon2/Magico Q3/Wilson Sophia 3 hope you enjoy. More..
For the bass part, Montis are still on rubber feet that could have caused some muddy feel. Also there is bass level control, I sat at 0 and -1 During comparision with Q7, with -1 made a less muddy feel. During playback, entire structure, wood cabinet, Frame, front metal, grill vibrate badly. But with little vibrate area this may not be much promlem, Q7 structure vibrated too, but much much less and felt higher in frequency. And if you wanna go loud, there is not problem with Montis. Also the not as soft sound may be due to reflection from projection screen and audio rack Behind them. Now I curious, how will CLX plus a pair of BF212 subs sound like. And how will Montis sound with tube amp. .. Hmm.. Toga |

Toga, that's a great post
I'm impressed by the Montis after how you described them. I never heard electrostatic speakers but I need to try our of curiosity. I would love to see the back of the room. The front is already very impressive. |

Toga, shall we bring my MC275 over to test the tube amp angle?
And am I learning I should not blink: Captain Toga might have just buzzed overhead in his 500MPH jet, OR he might have added even more components to his long list of auditioned audio gear. Hmm, Toga, last year Magico; this year Martin Logan. Are you planning on going through speakers alphabetically? Ha ha ha I guess next up will be McIntosh? If you have time, I'd love to hear the MLs in person Thanks for so many wonderful posts about all the great gear that finds its way into your room. Last edited by bachrocks; 02-15-2014 at 08:23 AM. |

Ron, Sorry it was too late, I returned Montis to dealer before I leave for Japan. When I come back they will send me smaller model down the line, the Ethos. Funny my dad asked me why I send them back if I like them. haha, this time he was not complaining. Oh Ron, soon, I hope, I will invite you to hear them, an entire set. Overall they are very good and fun, I think they sound rather hifi compared to Q7, but I didn't mean it in a bad way. Montis made everybody happy and smile. After Montis's bass, the Q7 bass sounded like bass reflex design. I spend entire afternoon to learn to love Q7 one more time. and sorry for my poor written English. I know you can't stand it as an English teacher. Toga

Don't blink with Toga. The words have never rung truer than now. Oh, I am so slow. You know. I thought I was fast this time, but still, I was too slow. The MLs have left the stage. Now, only those Magicos. Ha ha ha
Your English is fine: it's just your mind is finer. I mean your brain is processing more complex thoughts than your language can handle. Sounds like an impedance mismatch to me. Last edited by bachrocks; 02-15-2014 at 09:28 AM. |

I've also seen the amount of gear that have passed by this room. This is impressive and I can say that you're officially insane Any of us, would be happy to have a tenth of what crossed that room. |
