I found that if you go and listen to 'live' classical music, you will appreciate more than if you try to pick it up from listening to it on your system...

Personally, I am also stirred by going to listen to Beethoven's 9th symphony... LIVE...

I would also think that you really truly do need a good sound system to appreciate classical at home.... and you do have to develop a taste for it...

truly listening.. helps...

There is some jazz music.. that can be quite hard to get into... there's some pretty freaky stuff going on at times...

Gained an appreciation of this down at the Newport Show playing track 4 (the sea; the ship goes to pieces..) of the Reference Recordings CD like it was a heavy metal track ;-)

Great gut level impact when the orchestra pounds in time after time. As a big Mogwai fan I do love a bit of the quiet-LOUD :-D

When I play this one in my waiting room, people ask me for the title... and tell me later they actually bought it!

You learn to listen to it.
As you learn to appreciate a good wine with lots of tannins.
Or a fine Cuban or Dominican Cigar.
Or a single malt.
Or...

Julian: Good thread, but I get the feeling that the folks that will end up enjoying this thread are the classical lovers themselves. I know that I've already ordered at least one album from this thread!

I have both of these and agree with you on both. Great choices for starting a classical library.
