I totally O Died on the Symph's when younger, so haven't really been back since; I was a real fan of the Karajan.

Fricsay's is a favorite for many good reasons.

My personal favorite, as mentioned by antonmb is Wand with the NDR.

Runners up would be the 62 Karajan/Berlin and the 72 Solti/Chicago.

If it's for your own listening, I think the conundrum you face given your world class hyper revealing systems is that there can be in large part an inverse relationship between quality of sound and quality of performance for this particular work. You may be aware, but the Fricsay was recorded in 58 and I believe was the very first stereo recording made by DG, so very early technology. The sound is still exceptionally good, though, and the quality of the performance outweighs any minor deficiency in the quality of the recording.

My bad, I corrected.
I own the box with all 9 symphonies.

Just thought I'd mention, in case anyone looked on Tidal for the Gunter Wand recording and didn't find it, that for reasons unknown, it's called "Dimension No.5".

Thanks! I just “bought” all of them (i.e., added them to my library via Roon/Tidal). [emoji51]

George Szell with Cleveland is my personal reference. The latest SACD remastering (available on Amazon Japan) is fantastic and finally lets these jaw-dropping performances be heard in their full glory.

The performance is utterly perfect in every single way - I am still looking for one that can top it!

The Karajan from the 60s SACD is at or near best for me.
