And just because you don't agree with his opinion does not mean you can shut him down by trying to discredit him. Remember, it is YOU who has not heard or directly compared the ref 6 to the ref 10. |

Also no one is shutting him down just calling out what I see far to often on forums. Speak for yourself not others and in the context of the conversation. Also Ken heard it at the dealer. Hasn't lived with it or compared it in his own system. Boy if I heard everything at a show or dealer and made final judgment And got on the Internet and told people what I don't like... Michael Fremer just reviewed the REF 6 next to his reference darTZeel preamp which cost more than double the REF 6 and never once used either of those words. In fact Fremer said the top end was polite. Go figure. Last edited by elem79; 11-20-2016 at 11:43 AM. |

I understand what Ken is trying to convey with the posts. He mentioned what it does in his envirionment in the midrange and upper treble and you are focusing on that one statement. Having owned numerous ARC products, I remember from ARC past models they always "voice" their top tier preamplifier above the lower models. I went thru this when I owned an SP14 and heard the dealers SP15 as a comparison. The Ref 6 is a fantastic preamp. I listened to it two weeks ago. I have a Ref 5SE and I am happy with it. I can only dream of a Ref 10 replacing my Ref 5SE.

I had a fully broken in REF6 in my system for two weeks and I currently have a REF10 in my system, so I know precisely what I'm talking about. I have run both an ARC REF CD-9 and K-01X as digital sources through these preamps. What is your experience with the REF10 in your own system on which you are basing your comparison and your opinions?

Competent enough to write all of what Ken wrote. But I did feel Ref40 to be more refined, relaxed and ease while Ref 6 was Like AMG version of S-Class Merc. In 3 years from now ARC will be 50. So canwe expect the Anniversary to be a preamp again ? I can wait, livng with Ref40 till REF50 come. Yes REF6 has sharper attack and edgier than REF40, so I think what Ken described was right. A relative comparison. Nevertheless I like this kind of ref6 sound. Toga |

I personally could live with the ARC REF CD-9 / REF6 combo, the REF CD-9 / REF10 combo or the K-01X / REF10 combo. I personally couldn't live with the K-01X / REF6 combo, just a bit too edgy IMHO. My current system (gear which I own) is the Esoteric K-01X, REF10, Vandersteen M7-HPA Mono Amps and Vandersteen Model 7 MkII speakers.

I've heard the REF 10 as well and a few other ARC preamps and amps in my own system and others. You made a negative comment about its character and I disagree with you, BUT we digress as the thread was about the REF6 compared to the 40th anniversary. I wasn't commenting to get into a back and forth about which is better. On that note I have nothing more to add. All the best! Eric |

Seriously....Whether you favour an agile 4 Lt 911 or a consummately
powerful V12 Bently Continental GT, ditch the factory Sovtek 6550's for circa 1970's GE 6550A's Neither pre will deliver their full potential otherwise. |

I understand someone is having trouble with "relatively"
British Dictionary definitions for relatively adverb 1. in comparison or relation to something else; not absolutely |
