PUREPOWER 2000 Explosion!

Howie....I actually was down at the dealer's today, and had a chat with Damian Janzen because I had ordered a PurePower 3000 unit quite sometime back, and I wanted to speak to/see him personally to see why there was a delay in shipping these last couple of months......during our conversation, he also actually mentioned to me about a PurePower 2000 unit malfunctioning here in HK, so I guess this must be the one he was referring to......I could be mistaken, but I think he said it had something to do with the heat sensor not reading the temperature correctly, and that this was indeed a very rare occurrence (a first for PurePower)......in any event, Damian has always been most helpful, responsive and gracious with his time when I have called him in the past (even though he must be busy as hell being that he is the company founder)......thus it is of no surprise to me that I hear PurePower is going to send you a replacement unit ASAP, and thank goodness none of your equipment got fried!!......Philip

Yup, even worse; fire is not uncommon. The names of the competitors gear was covered with tape, but you could tell what brands they were.

Reading this thread with keen interest as I'm seriously looking to purchase this unit. What is the best method to protect your investment? Insurance?

Does AP provide any coverage to damaged other equipment in case a "sensor" malfunctions?

Insurance is always the last resort. Personally, I have never had a circumstance (mine or a customer) where connected equipment was damaged by audiophile grade surge protection.

Phillip, you hit the nail on the head.

I quote from Damian's email to me

"Hi Howard,

I inspected the unit myself and found the cause. It appears that the temperature sensor that is part of our analog voltage control of the fan system was failing to report a rise in operating temperature. This resulted in the fan system remaining at the minimum level. Over a period of time, one of the power mosfets overheated and failed causing a short. This in turn caused some other small diodes and ceramic caps in the low voltage control system power supply to fail.

I have never seen the sensor fail before, it is a very simple and (almost) foolproof component.

You can rest assured that your attached components were never in any danger. There is no failure mode of the PurePower unit design that can pass harmful voltages through to the output receptacles.

I am sure that Rex and Excel will take good care of you and arrange your replacement in reasonable time. They are expecting new stock over the next couple of weeks.

That is what I call great service from a reputable company. Good thing too - as I have been recommending the PP 2000 to many of my friends.

One of those bits of gear that will benefit just about any system regardless of cost.
