Ken... it wasn't designed for network applications; this is for gear that transmits a proprietary digital data stream ie: Accuphase DP900/DC901

Ken, I am not the expert, and not sure why I heard such profound differences, but maybe you can shed some light. I recently as an experiment turned my laptop into a NAS in order to compare sound quality to just using an HD connected to my network player. My router is a cheap budget unit, and it was connected to my Network player with standard 15 meters CAT6 solid core cable. I just downloaded server software and connected my WD HD to the laptop. The laptop was connected to the router with standard 1.5m CAT5e.

The SQ was inferior to using the HD via USB, and I could hear a weird tonality in voices. The network implementation was crude, but I am trying to understand why the sound was so unnatural. Is it because the router is low quality, or because my laptop was converted to a NAS, or perhaps the network cable itself. Either way my experiment shows that a network solution for audio can be compromised, and could have a major impact on SQ if not implemented properly with high quality parts.

Not going to hijack this thread..... but the short answer is cat5 thru cat7 via a media player from a sever/nas doesn't carry an audio signal, it is a data package signal this is the difference that trips up folks! I completely understand and agree with Ivan response to me. Accuphase is using cat7 as a audio signal cable which is fine. I'm sure Wireworld will do world class job when the product is released. But swapping cat7 in home networking environment and excepting an audio difference just isn't going happen. What you're dealing with is audio signal latency. What you are hearing is dropouts or packet loss. This is confined only to hardware ie router, media player, NAS, server, computer CPU priority overhead, and the number of devices on your network. Cat5 cable has more than enough data bandwidth in home networking environments for 99% of home use. To further my point when you listen via your laptop for example. You except to hear the song in "X" amount time upon pressing play. If the audio latency is under 5ms all will be fine, but if the latency is over 20ms. You'll may hear it is as a smearing, muddy, tonal oddities or even skipping! This is all caused by hardware NOT cabling!! Hope this shed some light...
