No need for Facebook or other social media.

Even LinkedIn, which was supposed to be a professional network has gone to hell.

It has become a popularity contest with people vying for the most connections and endorsements which are solicited and given back and forth among members, most of whom don't even know each other. I have pages of people inviting me to their networks that I never responded to because I have never met them, let alone heard of them or know who they are.

It got even worse now that they have college kids on it.

FB requires some understanding from the user, It can be really awful if you just leave the privacy settings and do not create custom lists.

I have 3 Custom lists.

Inner Circle - those who I can post or share almost anything with, and those who's post I want to read.

Family- those I who I share family related pictures or events, and those who I limit to what I read.

Acquaintances - I don't see there posts and they don't see mine, I view this list if I am looking for entertainment or to see what the vibe is.

I don't "like" and business except for McIntosh Labs

I belong to several private groups, one is called the "Audiophile network" -https://www.facebook.com/groups/audiophile.community/

the other is Highend & Vinyl Lovers -https://www.facebook.com/groups/HVLunited/

this way I see what I want to see, it's curated for me and my interests.

Yes I'm happy that there are checks & balances in those regards here as long as I'm not persecuted for subscribing to the Ancient Alien theory.

I have no use for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MSN Network, or iGoogle. I connect with people the old fashioned way by calling them and talking or going to visit them face to face. I use email to send photos to those I wish to see a picture. They do the same for me. I have no need to expose myself to the BS of the general world population through networking. AA is the only online site I spend time socializing and that centers on my interests in audio. Wanting to be 'liked' or have a 'friend counter' keeping me posted on who thinks they're my friend is so lame, empty, and devoid of reality. To each their own, but I see no value in any of it for my life.

In my opinion it is never wise to mistake friendly for friendship. Friendly is how I am to most people if I can be, otherwise I can be quite unfriendly when there is a reason. Friendship is another story entirely. Knowing who I am doesn't mean we are friends, it means we are possibly acquaintances, then again maybe not even that. This is a far cry from friends in my book. Friendship is developed over a period of time, usually a long time, sharing common experiences and time together that also includes trials and tribulations that tests a person's behavior and personality. Friendship is something to be nurtured and is grown through mutual trust which must be earned. It is almost comical to witness what so many people think friendship means and how shallow the connection really is when they refer to someone as their friend. I am amused when I hear someone say they have 1326 "friends". I have maybe five, but they are people who actually know who I am, I know who they are, and there is strong mutual respect and common interests that have taken years to develop. I don't believe you really ever know someone well until at least five years have past, sometimes ten years. Maybe that's why I have only a few real friends. That's plenty for me. The rest of the networking cloud is nonsense as far as I am concerned. It is a huge data base of voluntarily provided personal information that is routinely mined, hacked, and abused by criminals, pedophiles, and other unsavory types, not to mention the world's governments. I'll pass.

Nice post Dan and I mostly agree although I have to use LinkedIn for work purposes.

Facebook is the devils work as far as I am concerned.
