I'd also go 1008's with subs, compared to 1028 or 1038's.
Especially if I had limited placement options for the speakers.

Getting the optimal placement for floorstanders is tricky.
Its very hard to find the best placement for bass, treble and midrange at the same spot.

I have the 1008's as surround speakers, but thinking about using them as mains for a while.
I have a good quality sub too.

I use the Sopra 2's as mains now.

The only bad thing about the 1008's is that the original stands are too expensive and made in a high gloss which can get scratches very easy.

Yep that was the move I made. 1028BEs -> Sabrinas.

Hi Superfrg,
Room placement should not be a problem, since I have a dedicated listening room
I am more concerned about the bottom end. The other speakers I consider are the Spendor D7 and the PSB Imagine T3.

That room looks very nice!

With that in mind, its a Coin toss for your Focal options on say the 1038 vs 1008 /w one/two good subs.

The other two I havent heard.

If 30Hz is a must and you want floor standing Focals. Scala Utopias are your only choice.

Sopra N3 would be a better option than the 1038be.

Still most pleased with my 1008BeIIs. Driving them with a heart stopping 10wpc of EL84 power. Terrific speakers.

Thanks for the responses folks. Scala Utopia and Sopra floorstanders are out my budget. I have located the nearest dealer to me who is 3 hours away and he carries the 1038/1028. Will try to audition the loudspeakers there and then decide.
Again, Thanks much for your responses.

Thanks!
I have a 2-channel setup. I bought the 1028's about a year ago after getting rid of a pair of B&W's I had. After breaking them in, I decided they didn't have enough low-end for me, so I added two JL Audio f110's. Things really sounded a lot better, but was still missing something. I dreamed of finding a speaker that had enough low-end so I didn't need subs in my 2-channel set-up. I traded in the 1028's and got the 1038's. The improvement was dramatic. Now I don't "need" the subs badly anymore like I did with the 1028's, but I still have my subs because I just think they add something that is very difficult for any speaker in my price range to accomplish. The frequency range on the subs just gets lower than the my mains can, and when I turn off the subs, I'm missing out on some music down there. I started looking at some Magico's with 8" woofers, thinking this would solve the problem. I auditioned a few pairs without subs, then came home and listened to my set-up *with* subs, and quickly forgot about upgrading again.

You'd do well with the 1008's + subwoofers. I think the only thing you'd be missing with that setup is some really good punchy mid bass, like I felt was lacking with my 1028's with subs. But "what sounds good" is all up to your own ears. If you are really nitpick-y with sound quality, and like having a full range all the way down low, then it's going to be hard for you to find any main's that will satisfy that itch. I've blown through 4 pairs of mains in 5 years before finally just "settling" with the 1038's and realizing I'm just going to have to have subs to get the low range I want. A different persons ears will have a completely different opinion though.
