I ended up getting a Schiit Loki (4 band EQ) that runs through the processor loop on my MAC6700. I don't boost with it, I just use it to lower the midrange a few dB. I did play around with it a little bit though and the results were pretty interesting. I thought the bass control on the 6700 did a better job than the Loki. The Loki boosts it, but the 6700 seems to just grow it and make it sound much fuller. Totally different sound. The treble is about even, but I can tell the Loki has a much narrower band that it boosts.

So I agree completely, listen how you like it!

Happy Sunday everyone. I have a question for you guys-is anyone here using the C53 in their system for equalization on 2 channel and pass-through for Home theater using the MX150? From what we are reading on the C53 it can be done but wondering if that causes a noise issue.

You can choose equalization on or off for each input. When off, circuitry is bypassed. I notice no noise from the equalization in any combination.

Is there a recommended smart phone app that people use to get a rough idea of how good/bad their actual delivered in-room response is? At low volumes I do use my loudness button but am curious as to how close or far off my system is (without buying a Men220 or subwoofer)

I use Spectrum Analyzer RTA by Onyx. It has 1/3 octave RTA, FFT analyzer, and pink/white noise generator built in.

Hi,

Not sure what you mean by ‘off’. If you need data to augment the next best measuring device, your ears, then I suggest a couple of options. One barely okay and the other very good.

Barely okay (it gives you data)

Download AudioTools onto your smartphone. It will give you basic FTA results for your room. The biggest drawback is the software but the microphone in your phone. It’s useless to measure the low end of your room but gives you some data of dubious value.

Very Good

Download REW (Room EQ Wizard) and order a MiniDSP UMIK - 1 USB microphone. Assuming you have a laptop and a microphone stand of some sort, that system will give you very good measurements of your room. AND tons of data to stew on.

I'm assuming by reading your post that "useless to measure the low end of your room" is the microphone in my Samsung S10 is the issue. I downloaded Spectroid before I read the advice I had gotten and there is a huge loss at the low end starting around 80Hz. I'll order the MiniDSP UMIK USB microphone next, thanks!!

Yes. As far as I know, the microphones in smart devices are limited in their sensitivity below certain frequencies. Somewhere around 80Hz.

Once you get your UMIK, make sure you go to their website and download the calibration file for your product. REW will ask you if you have a calibration file once it recognizes your UMIK connected to your laptop.

By the way, you will also need a way to connect the headphone output of your microphone into your preAmplifier.

Good luck. REW (which is FREE) has a large following online and a huge amount of helpful tricks on getting it working and then understanding what it’s various measures are telling you.

I should add the following after watching some videos by Studio Six regarding the many functions their AudioTools app can provide.

Apparently there MAY be ways to use the microphone on your phone. All I know is my IPhone 8 does not give me useful data. Probably user error.

AudioTools has many functions for purchase that offer detailed analysis (like REW) of your room or car system. But you must pay for them.

REW is free.

I would not think of the MEN220 as a reference source. As numerous reviewers have pointed, and as I experienced myself during a loaner period, there are pluses and minuses to using one. Many are pleased with the trade offs, I was not. Best to decide using your ears in your home.
