Default HiFi can be really complicated sometimes.....

Hello folks,

I discovered something really strange.
With my new 300B preamp, using my main power amps, the sound of digital is gorgeous. Much better than what I had with the C1000P.
But things become complicated when I listen to vinyl with the Ref phono 2 preamp, no matter if I use the Clearaudio / Denon ESC or the P9 / Exact cart : the sound is harsh and cold and fully unmusical with my main amps! While it was gorgeous with the C1000P used as the line preamp and the Ref phono 2.
Now, when I use the Snappers instead of my main amps, the sound of vinyl becomes wonderful again : full, warm, natural and perfectly balanced. Still sounding very good on digital, the Snappers are not as refined and musical as my main amps which are much better.
What the hell ???
So to resume :
Main amps / 300B / vinyl : very bad
Main amps / 300B / digital : wonderful
Snappers / 300B / vinyl : wonderful
Snappers / 300B / digital : very nice but less good as my main amps.
Let's go to bed ! I'm fed up ! Some phenomenons are just too hard for me to understand.

Jérôme.......May well be attributed to impedance mismatch between components.

Maybe interconnects, phono stage, cartridge. Kinda hard to say.

Dan,

I thought about that. But it can't be.
If there was an impedance mismatch between the Ref 2 and the 300B, then, vinyl would not sound so good with the Snappers. And if the mismatch is between the 300B preamp and my main amps, then digital would not sound so good.
Really strange.
I think that there is probably a tone mismatch. No one of these components is perfectly neutral. They all add and remove something from the signal.
Obviously 300B / REF PHONO 2 / Main amps is really a poor sounding combo.
Very disappointing.

Jérôme
Is it possible that you might need to do some cable matching?

May be coming Doug. I thought I changed but I think I'm finally completely nuts and impossible to treat.

Think I got it Dan.

300B is VERY transparent like main amps and REF2 and Wilsons. I am hearing all the defects of the recordings in this combo.
Either the Snappers or the C1000P were adding warmth and masking those defects.
300B / Mda 1000/ main amps / Wilsons is fine because MDA is warm.
Warmth is needed in this system and components that are too clear and transparent all together give an awful sound. Just an ounce of warmth and the magic reappears.
The perfect balance is on a very tiny wire.
