My conclusion at the time was I should upgrade my speakers and source first, which is what I did. I came home sold my speakers, bought the SF cremona's and then the MCD500. I will give the 501's a home demo if Serge lets me. Thanks for your help my brother from another mother

I think that you should consider other reasons/justifications for upgrading to the 501s - less rational than "I can hear a big difference" but, ultimately, very important ones.

1) You will stop thinking about the decision and get even deeper in the zone. A lot of people with MC252s, don't have the 501 itch - but you do (and so did I). As long as you keep talking about it and thinking about it, it will be a distraction. There's only one way to get rid of the itch.

2) There is also the pride of ownership ... every time I look at the 501s and their huge blue eyes, I smile. They are more of a "statement piece" than the 252s. They are the center of my system and the second thing my friends and visitors notice (the first is the Guarneris ) and gasp.

3) There is the knowledge that you've already gone well past what's considered reasonable. You have 1000 high-quality McWatts at your disposal. You have an amp that received rave reviews (from pros and owners). Thoughts of further upgrades will just evaporate.

4) They are almost free. Whether you keep them for 2 or 3 years and re-sell them, or keep them for the next 10+ years, they will cost you next to nothing. If you resell them in 2-3 years, you are not going to lose much because these babies keep their value very well. If you keep them for 10+ years - well you do the math (cost - resale value / 3000+ days = <$1/day).

Bottom line. If $3k does not make much of a difference to your finances, and your set-up/rack can accommodate them, go for the 501s. On some level it might not be the most rational of decisions, but on many other levels it is.

I'll say it again...I love my 501's. As Alberto says, there is something about those huge blue eyes (now, if you want EVEN BIGGER blue eyes...well, you can fill in the blank). I too owned a 252 as a sub amp....when I took it out and but in the 501 in its place, the 501 actually looked bigger, even though the faces of both units are exactly the same size. This was of course due to the meter. (and perhaps that the raised section of the front panel is wider on the 501). At any rate the 501 is more of a statement piece, as Alberto points out....

I jump on the wagon with Alberto to say...if you have the itch, and you can afford it, scratch it!

These are two of the best comments that I have ever seen for this particular argument.

David, pay particular attention the part about your set up/rack. You have a BEAUTIFUL and clean/simple set-up as it is. Probably part of your overall enjoyment, make sure that you have a way to beautuflly integrate your new 501's.

Remember, this is a not an irreversable decision. There will always be 252 out there should you decide that it was not the right move for you.

But, until you do, you will be wondering...

Some day and believe me, that day will come, we'll have to celebrate David's upgrade to 501s. I for one, am developing carpal tunnel explaining the benefits of 501s to David for the past 3-4 months....

Serge.......as it was said before at "another" forum......make a trip to David's place and drop them off. Your return trip home will be much lighter,,,.better gas mileage
