Ever since the Barbary Coast ended I've been having trouble finding a good bottle of Night Train or Thunderbird out here.

Well, with taxes and importation / distribution fees, a french wine costing 50 $ in France will cost 100 $ in the US / Canada.
Yes I drink wines costing 100$ and more but I also appreciate many wines costing about 20 euros in France ( 32 - 35 $ ). Some 20 euros wines are sometimes better than many wines costing more than 100 euros...

I enjoy wine but stay under $35 a bottle and mostly drink wine in the $10-15 range. Whiskey I stay under $60 and most bottles are $25-30. Craft beer usually around $8-10 per six pack.

I generally stay between the $35 and $100 range but always have several bottles of better wines in the cellar. I prefer fresher wines which are less expensive.

As I got older my appreciation for wine increased. One promise I made to myself was that as soon as I made real money in the work place I would stop drinking £5 wine! They only made the hangover worse!
Of course there are some very nice wine's in that price range but compared to a more expensive wine that is made under better conditions, well they don't compare really. The most I paid for a bottle would have been about $70 USD (when converted). I was looking for a nice wine to go with our Goose X-mass dinner. I have a few independent wine shops around me (where I live and where I work) so I have some good places to go to when looking for advice. In general though I would say the average price I pay would be about $30 and I usually buy French or Italian. I also like Argentinian and Portugese wine. Luckily I'm am here in the UK so the prices are reasonable. I'm not sure what these would cost in the US or Canada (where I grew up). I also prefer to match wine with my food when possible. I think it can make a real difference. I don't mind breaking the rules either but it's good to get the right wine to match with your meal. It adds something to the over all experience. I'm turning 40 this year so one of my plans is to get a nice bottle of wine in the higher end and cook myself a nice meal and enjoy it. There will be other events I suppose but I do like treating myself on my birthday. Eddie |
