Stephen,
I have ordered the 40.1 as an alternate flavor with the Wilsons in my main system. Alrhough Jonathan and Neil said that they won't work with my 70 W class A Shindo monoblocks, I can't wait to get them. If the Shindo are out of juice, they will be driven by my Mc MC2205. They will leave the dealer tomorrow. Shipped from Germany. Have a safe trip beauties ! Stephen, there is a mint pair of HL5 for sale in the Netherlands ( previous model of Super HL5). The price is 950 euros ! ( they were a bit more than 3k new). Many fans of it on the Harbeth forum. This could be a super smart way to enter the Harbeth world... Imho the HL5 or SHL5 will surely give more weight and extension in the bass.

Have you seen this thread on the Harbeth forum with this user driving the 40.1 with an old Sansui 2 x 15 W amplifier ?

"Clearly there is a strong emotional bond between you and this nearly forty year old mid-market amplifier. I respect that. But can you see the irony of the situation? You are seeking fast track to the holy grail of two channel audio reproduction (a 3D sound stage) but your route there is in a Morris Oxford." But how many designers would even engage in such a discussion, let alone actually sound intrigued by it And as you own something rather better than a Morris Oxford...... |

I agree, very funny thread ! AS is pretty exceptional to take care of this user forum. This is quite unique on the market. Your last statement put a smile on my face

Jerome,
Congrats on the 40.1s. I have not heard them but I have heard the 30.1s and like them a lot! Thx!

FWIW, they really don't sound as much alike as one might presume, despite the shared components. Counterintuitively, the overall impression of the 40.1 struck me as closer to the Compact 7, less intimate than the 30/30.1, but with a bigger sound front. The 30/30.1 is a rather unique speaker, nothing quite like it really, even in the Harbeth line. About as intimate, accurate, and convincing as a speaker can be in catching the human voice, close instrumental acoustics, ensembles. Not nearly as good for large scale symphonic pieces (unless you like sitting in the front row), or full throttle rock. At what it does best, there may well be none better; but, it's not for everyone, given it's rather specialized talents. I happen to think the areas where it excels -- vocals, natural acoustics, are the emotional core of the musical experience, but obviously, that's true for me, not everyone.

I went to the Harbeth UK site, but cannot picture what they look like in a real setup. Thanks in advance.
