Wow ... glad it worked out! My 'advice' as I said was only a guess based on sonic description(s) I have read ... Glad to hear you like them! One day I should try some! I keep going for the 'clear, detailed' sonics but maybe there is something to be said for the 'warm, smooth, and rich' as well!

Hey ... lets not get into the SS vs tube debate ! ... Check out the Ayre top of the line pre if you want .. I've listened to it and its refer'd to as the 8 th wonder of the world ... LOL

I dont think i'm missing any detail or top end ... The trick is .. start with great stock;then, have a comprehensive testing, sorting, grading scheme ; then, post-process the tubes as thoroughly as pearl in calgary alberta does ....clean the pins , and then,do cryogenic treatment "properly"

Seriously i've found what i believe is the holy grail of 12ax 7 ...

Otherwise i was prepared to leave this C2200 behind and either buy levinson 326 pre , or the Ayre

But no need spend the money now >>>>

that's the difference i've heard !!

When those teslas show up ... if you really want i could actual try them for yuks >>> let you know ..... going back to what this thread is about

I didn't mean in SS terms! Well, not "necessarily"! but the Ayre gear certainly seems top-notch. I think I would miss tube rolling though!

I went back to all-tube a while back, but lean toward what 'traditionally' may be "SS-like" in terms of clarity, resolution, etc.. I am sure one can get all that plus a touch of warmth, life, or whatever that tubes bring to the table.

That said, if I had an extra $5k+ sitting around for an amp purchase ... I think I'd get an MC402! but since I likely will NOT have that level of spare cash (nor really a 'need' for the power) I am salivating over the thought of something like an MC202 if the cash/timing (as in availability) thing ever comes together sometime in the future ...

Meanwhile, I will enjoy what I have with an occasional 'mix' of a new tube flavor every once in a while.

Do you have a link to the specific Mullards you selected? I haven't searched for 'Pearl' (tube dealer?) in Calgary ...
