Drugs have a way of doing that. I watched the Beatles Anthology DVD while working out on my eliptical trainer and Ringo and Paul admit that the drugs had a impact on the music they were writing and playing.

You are correct, of course. There were a lot of excellent artists who came before the Beatles. A true Beatles fan would hasten to point out that some of those were major influences to the Beatles, but I don't want to go down that path.

The enormous success that the Beatles enjoyed seems to be ample evidence that they filled a void though.

I am very interested in the remastered set coming in September. I like some of the songs on the early albums and I would like to hear a higher quality version.

That pretty much describes where I am in the 'Beatles range' posted. I'm a little surprised I made it thru the 60's & 70's w/o owning any Beatles music. I did pick up one LP later, but that was because the price was right in the discount section.

I no longer have these four albums, but this was the extent of my Beatles collection.

As someone said above they were on the radio enough that I never bought a record. Now, years later I have a few CD's, and will get some of the remastered versions.

What I find lacking is that they did not get to perform live after 1966, and before that live Rock lacked proper sound reinforcement. I have seen other bands perform Beatles tunes live and the energy of the live performance demonstrates both the power of their music, and how deeply embedded their music is in the collective musical consciousness, nearly genetic.

Part of their power is the sheer quantity and range of music they put out over their 8-or-so years, and how when you sit down to listen, you come across a song and think "oh yeah, I forgot that one, and what a great song it is". I don't think any other rock band or artist had such a range of styles and/or moods. As incongruous as it may sound, nobody else in the 20th century comes to mind for such diversity other than Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. I may be missing someone, but talent like that is a once-in-a-generation kind of phenomenon.

My previous LP collection contained all of their LP's except for the compilation releases(greatest hits type of releases). I know have all of their stuff on CD except Abbey Road which I have on vinyl. The CD versions that I have sound better on CD than LP in my opinion. Who ever did the digital mastering and transfer from analog tape to digital really cared about the sound.
