Default Contour 30 or 60?

I am contemplating dipping my toes back in the waters of floorstanders. Historically, I haven’t had much luck. Yes, they sounded good, but, for some reason, monitors always sound better to my ears. But now that I am satisfied with my amps, I am looking to get back in the game.

Yes, Confidence 30 would be an amazing speaker, but I am hesitant to make such an investment if I can’t get the sound I’m after.

Since I am more than satisfied with my Contour 20, I am deciding between the 30 and 60. Ideally, I would go with the 60, but I am concerned about overwhelming my room, which is 16 by 14 but well treated.

Would I be giving up a lot by going with 30’s or are they just less of a good thing?

If neither of the Dyns work out for you, I'd suggest you consider the Vimberg Mino (April Stereophile cover and Class A full range rated; little brother of Jeff Fritz' reference speaker) or the new Magico A5.

I am a Sonus Faber owner but I really like the Dynaudio Contour series of speakers. I have listened to the 20 and 60 several times.
What is it that you are after?
Is the 20 some what light in the lower freq?

I really like the impact of the 60, but in you room I think it might deliver too much base.
Do you have any base traps or other low freq treatment in the room today?

The best is of course to try the equipment at home with your own amp. In my experience, most dealer will let you do this.

I have plenty of bass with my JL Audio Fathom 112 V2 subwoofer. I also have plenty of ASC bass traps and other acoustic treatments so I’m not worried about having the sound bounce all over the place.

I’m looking to have a three way (or 2.5 in the case of the 30) because they outperform a two way and take the pressure off the crossovers. They also have a fuller more complete sound. And now I have plenty of power with my Pass Labs 260.8 monos. I just don’t want to overwhelm the room, both physically and sonically. My Strads were an overwhelming physical presence.

Unfortunately, I have not found a Dynaudio dealer that will allow me to have a home demo. So I’m throwing darts and hoping for a bullseye.

Default Contour 30 or 60?

Can someone please explain what a 2 1/2 way speaker is exactly? I understand the basic concept, but why not just have a 3 way if you put 3 drivers in?

Typically a 2.5 speaker has a mid bass driver instead of a true midrange. It helps out with the bass. It has to do with cabinet size, the Q of the bass driver size tuning relative to the size of the cabinet. Think of it as two bass drivers but one typically crosses over higher than the other.

Default Contour 30 or 60?

Lars, i own both the Contour 30 and 60. I started with the 30 as my main speakers, then when I built my dedicated media room, I got the 60 and the 30 became my rear speakers. IMO, there is no comparison. The 60 is a much better speaker than the 30. It’s not just about bass. So many people are worried about the 60 having too much bass. In my experience, with the speakers appropriately positioned, ie pulled out into room away from boundaries, there is no boom. In fact, I have added (4) REL s/812 subs to complement the Contour 60s, albeit with the sub gain really low. By themselves, in my well treated, soundproofed room the 60s did not deliver anywhere near enough low end weight for my ears. Of course, YMMV. My room is bigger than yours at 22x15 but I would make a go with the 60s since you already own the 20s. I gotta say I am absolutely ASTOUNDED at the sound quality the 60s are capable of in my system. They are quite literally one of the least expensive components in my system and yet they reveal any change I make upstream. Truly beautiful sounding speakers at a real world price. Hopefully you can find a Dynaudio dealer that will work with you, allow you to try the 60 with caveat giving you option to trade down to the 30. Good luck.

I’m a big fan of Dynaudio speakers. At just under $10K MSRP for a pair of 60’s, it’s a steal.

Thanks Jason. That helps a lot. That’s exactly the kind of real world experience I was looking for.

Your room looks absolutely amazing! Easily one of best I have seen pictures of here.
