But cables don’t make any difference, wire is just wire! JK

Default Alexx update

After changing power cables, speaker positioning and driver alignment to still find that the sound was thin and underpowered, my Burmester dealer advised that I try changing one of the presets on the preamp. I changed the Output Amplification setting from Low (manual advises this setting) to High.
Voila!

The Alexx's sound great! Full bodied with deeper bass that I had with the Alexias. I'm a very happy camper.
Can anyone think of any risks or hazards keeping the preamp on this setting?
What a humbling experience.

Happy to read that you sorted it out. Why would you be concerned about leaving the preamp set using the high selection? If Burmester didn't say it was harmful I wouldn't worry. When I owned a solid state preamp it stayed on hours with no effect on performance or life span.

It's just a choice of gain settings so use the one that sounds the best to you. One is not right and the other wrong.

Hi.

The settings output on your Burmester preamp, as well as, HI and LO mean:

HI: increases the output voltage for power amps with low sensitivity

LO: Reduces the output voltage (recommended for Burmester power amps).

So if you have Burmester amp and pre, shouldn’t you stick with LO?

Usually when there is a high and low setting, the high setting is better performing - as most of the time the low setting is just "padded" down - many times with a resistor - so the high setting has less between you and the music. I'm sure there are times when the high has an extra gain stage - although I would assume not that often - if the was the case- then the low setting would be better

With Burmester amp/preamp combo It shall be settled on LO for a better sound quality as advice reported in their own preamp instruction manual. The perfection is fully achieved if the digital source is Burmester too.

The high setting was chosen at the advice of the NA Burmester distributor based on the entire system, source to speaker.
