And in light of the actual meaning of the word "metaphor", one could almost be forgiven for thinking that they're purely imaginary.

I have heard of Raven ribbon tweeters though, and briefly used Raven R1's as replacements for EMIT's in a pair of Infinity speakers. Like all ribbons they had their shortcomings at the top and bottom, but more so than most. They can't work down to 3kHz without lots of distortion and very compressed dynamics, and they're very directional at the top in the vertical plane. To my ears, the diamond tweeters in my 800D2's are way way ahead.

Not to sound jaded, but who actually takes audio reviews seriously? I trust reviews on AA and AS why more than any journal.

HifiCritic is quite good.
No commercials.

One review from anyone, commercial or otherwise, is not necessarily a good indicator. It's only when you have a good number of reviews from different sources that meaningful results can be drawn.

That said, Stereophile reviews are (IMHO) more reliable than most other mag reviews, simply because they allocate (where possible) the review samples to reviewers who have extensive experience with the brand, and usually a familiarity with previous iterations of the products under review. I think it works well for the brand as well as the prospective customers, of whom many will be established customers with an upgrade itch waiting to be scratched.

I tend to agree Art, besides I do enjoy reading J. Atkinson's technical side which helps to reinforce my basic belief that products that measure good have a real chance at sounding good whereas those that measure poorly rarely do.

Besides some German magazines (Stereo & Stereoplay) and HifiCritic, Stereophile is also for me a reference, and an enjoyable read.
Atkinson, Rubinson (for surround sound) are authors I rarely skip.

Absolutely. JA's comprehensive testing regime as well as his longstanding attention to consistency of methodology is second to none. I also get the impression that he really enjoys what he's doing.

From my POV, I quite like reviews where the subjective and objective evaluations are not in full agreement. It's those areas of grey that remind us that the learning never stops.

For me, all audio publications are read as entertainment. John Atkinson's "Measurements" sections in Stereophile reviews generally capture more of my attention than the reviewers' copy. None of the audio mags, not Stereophile, The Absolute Sound, Tone Audio, HiFi+, or others I periodically read are considered references for a purchase. That task requires my ears, something no publication is capable of exciting. I have subscribed to plenty of audio magazine, even as far back as High Fidelity, Stereo Review, and Audio. I have enjoyed many hours of relaxing reading, perusing the colorful advertisements, and being motivated by record reviews to try new music, but no publication reviews served as a catalyst for equipment purchases. Most of my exposure to gear I ultimately purchased came from exposure at friends homes, dealer show rooms, and audio shows. When it comes to audio my experience has been hearing and seeing is believing, not reading.

I'm very familiar with metaphor 1s as well as the proper implementation of the R1, both physically and electrically. Subjective conclusions aside, the R1 is far from dynamically compressed.
