Ivan.......I'm not saying the Cipher is ugly, just rather plain Jane with too many micro buttons. Seven buttons plus power, large enough for a human finger would be nice and I could operate the basic functions from the face, then put all the rest on the remote. That's just me......

[QUOTE=Masterlu;488590] I have an opportunity to demo the Krell Cipher CD/SACD player at my home; I am looking forward to it.

-> I'm sure AA readers would be really keen to hear what you perceive as the Ciphers strong points, given your experience with Burmester, Esoteric, McIntosh etc.

For sure the Cipher will spellbound you some what.
If you feel its hot property, & can arrange it, AA readers would I'm sure appreciate a descriptive review by Dan of the Cipher against either the Esoteric K03 (or McIntosh MCD1100 if Dan still has one in the house).

Another exciting prospect would be a review of the 'more affordable' 089 Burmester CD player (with inbuilt preamp) !

An attraction for AA subscribers into the future.....

Anthony.......Both of my MCD1100's are in other member's homes now. It would be interesting to see how it stacks up against the Burmester 089 or the Esoteric K-03.

When playing SACDs, does the Cipher maintain native DSD until the signal hits the DACS, or does it convert them to PCM?

I have a Cypher and I am using it with my Krell 707 and Evolution 600 amps. It has a good sound and great detail, but it does not sound to me a musical as I would like. For a short time, before it broke, I had a Levinson 502 player which I liked better. In fact, I would change the Cypher for a more musical CD player. Am I wrong here?

Have a follow-up question on your Krell Cipher CD/SACD player - you mention it broke (at some stage).
- Was the issue with the CD tray/drive mechanism or something else?

- Are we taking about the 2011-12 onwards model (pictured on this thread)?
===

On CD player musicality, my older McIntosh SACD500 is a thumbs up. Newer models can/will be more revealing, but there is a risk of too much detail on mid to upper frequencies that can affect the pleasure factor.
Forgiving speakers like Sonus Faber can be an answer in getting system balance sorted for a detailed and relaxed sound presentation.
