Default How many memebers make their own "Needle Drops?"

Needle drop: Definition: A bootleg conversion of a vinyl record to CD or CD-R. Usually taken from high quality special release records released in the 80's, that are not now available.

"Have you heard the Beatles White Album MFSL needle drop?. A million times better than the official EMI release."

[ame=http://youtu.be/PoIoewwgaow]Full Album/LP! Bossa Nova - New Brazilian Jazz - Lalo Schifrin - 1962 Audio Fidelity - YouTube[/ame]

I've begun to "Needle drop" some of my Vinyl/ Tape Albums so I may have them to listen to in my car and iPod.

Furthermore, while most debate Analog to Digital, I search for the best recording, I am starting to find that there were wonderful recordings done "back in the day" and to some credit there are good ones being done now too.

Also, I'm reaping the benifits of some of the old "pre-recorded" tapes of my favorite music I own from when I was a teenager. Maybe not the best, but the nostalgia of the sound and the fact that I am not paying twice or three times for the same music.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGFH1FwhDvw]Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks (Feat. Victoria Bergsman) (Teac A-4010 s Reel to Reel) - YouTube[/ame]

Nothing is pro-level quality, since I am not a mastering engineer, but this hobby is tons of fun.

Anyone?

Bill

p.s. There are a bunch of youtube recordings of vinyl "needle drops" see here

What software and hardware do you use to make the LP to CD conversion?

I have a number of LPs I would like to convert to CDs, but I don't want to keep my turntable with my main system. I just want to make the conversion to CD for digital access.

The linked videos are used with Audacity. See the Youtube channel for more info. I want to check out ChannelD's Pure Vinyl. Where it does auto track separation, so I can run it through a CDDB like database to auto track, title, and artwork.

A few years back I ripped my entire 4000+ LP collection to FLAC files. It took months to do but was well worth it.

i do not have the ability to needledrop my records but i have heard many needledrops on my system and many times the results are phenomenal. it all depends on the skill and turntable set up of the one doing the drop.

MY HERO!

Needle drops are difficult! Sure you can plug in the record out of your receiver into your computer or tape recorder.

But the infinite choices of each individuals preference of sound can shape the result.

i.e. I "needle drop" a great record, then I add my own "color" and EQ to it so all my music sound the way I want it

Then we can get into the whole high resolution transfers and the technicalities of archiving art. It's fairly interesting and it can be just plain awful if you don't know what you are doing.

It's the Classic Artist vs the Technician. And this directly relates to the Audiophile vs the Musician.

More info here, but I wanted to create the topic on this forum, because the Steve Hoffman folks are very serious about this, and kinda aggressive when it comes to this..

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Here's what I used for all my rips:

VPI HW-19 MkIII, upgraded to a Mk IV built by the late, great Brooks Berdan. It, along with all my LPs, is now gone. A casualty of tough economic times, related to health issues. Still have all my rips though!
