Lyrics That Get You
I have always been partial to artists and songs where the lyrics tell a story. Some more visual than others. Here are a few to start with. Post your favorites too.
Requiem For A Solider I Wish You’d lived to see What You gave to me Your Shinning Dream of Hope and Love Life and Liberty Dylan’s Shelter From The Storm Hundreds of interpretations of the meaning of this song. Bob Seger Night Moves I was a little too tall Could've used a few pounds Tight pants points hardly reknown She was a black haired beauty with big dark eyes And points all her own sitting way up high Way up firm and high Like A Rock My hands were steady My eyes were clear and bright My walk had purpose My steps were quick and light And I held firmly To what I felt was right Like a rock Fire Inside And it comes to you how it all slips away Youth and beauty are gone one day No matter what you dream or feel or say It ends in dust and disarray Simon & Garfunkel – The Boxer In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out |

Marc Cohn's - True Companion
When the years have done irreparable harm I can see us walking slowly arm in arm Just like the couple on the corner do 'cause girl i will always be in love with you And when i look in your eyes I'll still see that spark Until the shadows fall Until the room grows dark Then when i leave this earth I'll be with the angels standin' I'll be out there waiting for my true companion Just for my true companion |

It's funny, Jim...my wife is a lyrics person, and I'm not...AT ALL!! In fact, while I may know the words to songs, I don't usually put them together for their meaning. I guess you could say that I listen to the words as part of the musical flow, but I rarely listen to the story.
A couple of exceptions which rang particularly true after my divorce, however, were: The Corrs' I Never Loved You, Anyway, and the classic Brad Paisley's, I'm Gonna Miss Her: Brad Paisley I'm Gonna Miss Her Well I love her But I love to fish I spend all day out on this lake And hell is all I catch Today she met me at the door Said I would have to choose If I hit that fishin' hole today She'd be packin' all her things And she'd be gone by noon Well I'm gonna miss her When I get home But right now I'm on this lakeshore And I'm sittin' in the sun I'm sure it'll hit me When I walk through that door tonight That I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite Now there's a chance that if I hurry I could beg her to stay But that water's right And the weather's perfect No tellin' what I might catch today Well I'm gonna miss her When I get home But right now I'm on this lakeshore And I'm sittin' in the sun I'm sure it'll hit me When I walk through that door tonight That I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite Yeah, I'm gonna miss her Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite Of course, I'm now very happily married, but this was a goodie for marriage #1!

Isn't it amazing how some songs are able to exactly capture our feelings at a given time.

Guy Clark - Stuff That Works
I got an ol' blue shirt And it suits me just fine I like the way it feels So I wear it all the time I got an old guitar It won't ever stay in tune I like the way it sounds In a dark and empty room I got an ol' pair of boots And they fit just right I can work all day And I can dance all night I got an ol' used car And it runs just like a top I get the feelin' it ain't Ever gonna stop Chorus Stuff that works, stuff that holds up The kind of stuff you don't hang on the wall Stuff that's real, stuff you feel The kind of stuff you reach for when you fall I got a pretty good friend Who's seen me at my worst He can't tell if I'm a blessing Or a curse But he always shows up When the chips are down That's the kind of stuff I like to be around Chorus I got a woman I love She's crazy and paints like God She's got a playground sense of justice She won't take odds I got a tattoo with her name Right through my soul I think everything she touches Turns to gold |

Neil Diamond - Done Too Soon followed by He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother on the album Tap Root Manuscript Grabs me every time I listen - and I'm listening to it right now!
Done Too Soon Jesus Christ, Fanny Brice, Wolfie Mozart and Humphrey Bogart and Genghis Khan and On to H. G. Wells. Ho Chi Minh, Gunga Din Henry Luce and John Wilkes Booth And Alexanders King and Graham Bell. Ramar Krishna, Mama Whistler, Patrice Lumumba and Russ Colombo, Karl and Chico Marx, Albert Camus. E. A. Poe, Henri Rousseau, Sholom Aleichem and Caryl Chessman, Alan Freed and Buster Keaton too And each one there Has one thing shared: They have sweated beneath the same sun, Looked up in wonder at the same moon, And wept when it was all done For bein’ done too soon, For bein’ done too soon. For bein’ done. 1970 Prophet Music, Inc. He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother The road is long With many a winding turn That leads us to who knows where Who knows where But I'm strong Strong enough to carry him He ain't heavy, he's my brother So on we go His welfare is of my concern No burden is he, to bear We'll get there For I know He would not encumber me He ain't heavy, he's my brother If I'm laden at all I'm laden with sadness That everyone's heart Isn't filled with the gladness Of love for one another It's a long, long road From which there is no return While we're on our way to there Why not share And the load Doesn't weigh me down at all He ain't heavy, he's my brother He ain't heavy, he's my brother. You gotta hear em to appreciate em - but they will bring tears!

"Imagine" - John Lennon
Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say that I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one

I always like the lyrics to this song.
Bruce Springsteen The River Lyrics I come from down in the valley where mister when you're young They bring you up to do like your daddy done Me and mary we met in high school when she was just seventeen Wed ride out of that valley down to where the fields were green Wed go down to the river And into the river wed dive Oh down to the river wed ride Then I got mary pregnant and man that was all she wrote And for my nineteen birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat We went down to the courthouse and the judge put it all to rest No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle No flowers no wedding dress That night we went down to the river And into the river wed dive On down to the river we did ride I got a job working construction for the johnstown company But lately there aint been much work on account of the economy Now all them things that seemed so important Well mister they vanished right into the air Now I just act like I don't remember, mary acts like she don't care But I remember us riding in my brothers car Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir At night on them banks I'd lie awake And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take Now those memories come back to haunt me, they haunt me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse that sends me Down to the river though I know the river is dry Down to the river, my baby and i Oh down to the river we ride

"Daddy's Tune" Jackson Browne
A dirty wind blows through the sky And the Autumn leaves cut loose and fly Leave me watching And wishing I could follow Though among the regrets that I can't get by There are just one or two Unkind things I said to you Daddy what was I supposed to do? I don't know why it was so hard to talk to you I guess my anger pulled me through No sooner had I hit the streets When I met the fools that a young fool meets All in search of truth and bound for glory And listening to our own heart beats We stood around the drum Though it's fainter now The older I become Living your life day after day Soon all your plans and changes Either fail or fade away Leaving so much still left to say But Daddy I want to let you know somehow The things you said are so much clearer now And I would turn the pages back But time will not allow The way these days just rip along Too fast to last, too vast, too strong Somewhere something went wrong Or maybe we forgot the song Make room for my forty-fives Along beside your seventy-eights Nothing survives But the way we live our lives Dylan- Just like Tom Thumbs blues I started out on burgundy But soon hit the harder stuff Everybody said they'd stand behind me When the game got rough But the joke was on me There was nobody even there to bluff I'm going back to New York City I do believe I've had enough. Wow...where to begin? This isn't a half-bad chorus:
It's never over...my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder It's never over...all my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her It's never over...all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter It's never over...she's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever R.I.P. Jeff
