Thank you for this. After looking around, I was considering buying a new Rega RP-3 with its built in cartridge. I would love to find a used RP-6 for the same price.

Some general questions (pardon my ignorance):

1. MM vs. MC - does it matter?
2. Is MM/MC function of the cartridge only, or the entire turntable?
3. Can any cartridge fit any turntable?
4. Do cartridges have a lifespan? Do they need to be replaced every X years?

Thank you again!

'Cleanliness is next to Godliness' when it comes to vinyl, unless you love the sound of pops, clicks and surface noise !

Oh, I see what you meant by that. Well, I intend to take good care of my LP's, I guess it's part of the hobby :-)

Sure. Not cleaning records - noisey records - will cause dissapointment and lack of interest. It's what sent so many skittering to CDs. It is not enough to say you will take care of your records, thinking a record brush will do the trick. There are several theads on record cleaning. You can build your own ultrasonic unit cheaply. Yes doing vinyl is more expensive, but worthwhile.

Super interesting, I definitely need to learn more. I'll do some reading. Thank you!

You are off to a good start with the phono of the 2600 preamp. I'd find a new package deal or superpak that includes a MC cart in the 0.5mv output range. One thing to investigate with the Regas, I think the VTA adjustment is a PIA if even possible. Small VTA changes do make a difference.

Even new LPs can often benefit from a run through a good RCM.

MM (Moving Magnet) cartridges work with MM phono stages; MC (Moving Coil) work with MC phono stages (some high output MC will work on a MM stage). Your C2600 has both and is quite good for a built-in stage. Before venturing out to an outboard phono stage get to know your McIntosh one. Not all cartridges work with all tonearms. Cartridge compliance and tonearm effective mass play a big part in matching the two. I would suggest you start with a MM cartridge since you are just getting back into vinyl, do your research on MC cartridges and enjoy the hobby.

Thank you very much Miner and all. I have much to learn but am very excited to do it.
After a little bit of research I did, I think that I am going to buy a Clearaudio Concept with Ortophon Blue cartridge to begin with.
