Default What Classical Music Are You Listening To Tonight?

Palladian: The Devil's Trill - Sonatas By Giuseppe Tartini
Linn (2008), 24/88

Includes Tartini sonatas in G minor (The Devil's Trill) and A major, as well as Veracini's sonata no.7. An excellent recording overall, although the Tartini larghetto is just a bit too slow and lifeless. The Veracini is wonderfully played.

Ravel, Debussy, Fauré - String Quartets
Quatuor Ebène

I noticed that I play this really often.
Wonderful chamber music pieces, well executed and recorded.

Ha, though I've made note, thank you for the guidance. But whereas I can find enjoyment in multiple versions of Handel's Op 3 and Op 6, one version of Corelli's Op 6 will probably suffice.

I also finally got around to picking up the first RCA Living Stereo box of 60 and am working through it front to back. Holy smokes the sonics are fantastic on these! I can't imagine how wonderful the SACD versions of these are. Simply remarkable for mid-50s recordings. Not one is a duplicate of anything in my collection. I've selected other more current versions for the works I do have, and there are many works that I've never bought though am familiar with from concerts and radio.

^^^^ Indeed, these recordings are (mostly) true gems.

Listening to:

Mieczyslaw Weinberg - String Quartets Vol. 5
Quatuor Danel

Fascinating chamber pieces, that grow more and more on me (just like Shostakovich did).
This ensemble is top!

Wow, how is it I've never heard of Mieczyslaw Weinberg? I had to find these pieces on Qobuz, fascinating stuff - a whole new area of exploration ahead of me.

Welcome to the world of the RCA Shaded Dog. Many are famous exemplars, with record number prefixed with 'LSC'. These RCAs, along with early Deccas and Mercury Living Presence records set the standard against which modern recordings are judged. The better your system, the more amazing they'll sound.

It is likely some the very best from conductor Fritz Reiner are in your collection. Mint original LPs go for big bucks. The best re-issues are from Analogue Productions.

Default Telemann: Tafelmusik

Starting off the week with some delightful baroque music...

Telemann: Tafelmusik I-III (complete)
Musica Antiqua Koln (on authentic instruments), Reinhard Goebel

As I have written before, this set is excellent on both performance and musical counts. The 1989 recording is sharp and detailed.
