If the MS300 was just a normal run of the mill AV product, I would just deep six it. To some, I'm sure consider it just that. And I'm sure these same people would say it's time has come so just move on and get over it. But to me, it's an old friend which has given me a great deal of pleasure over the years. I like the user interface and that Mcintosh look. I realize there are products available today that can hold more music, sound much better and are simple to update.
I guess I will just have to decide what I will do. One thing for sure is some how there will be a working MS300/750 in my life again. |

Shhhhh! No telling people the scientific method!
Seriously, though - it does suck when the backbone of a rig goes offline.

I've been following this thread from the beginning. I, too, have a MS -300 -750 for about 4 years and would not want to do with out it. Last year I had the power supply replaced and it worked just fine. In the past I have upgraded my drive to a 750 gig and put a new fan in the unit. Now a year later It's getting harder to reboot. I've been lucky and have gotten it to re-boot with some problems but when it reboots I just hope the power stays on. Any way I've been looking on the internet under McIntosh and Ecient to see what others say about this problem. To my surprise Ecient the real manufacturer of the machine makes a long list of products under the name of Fire ball. All these machines suffer from the same Achilles heal. The blinking red light that never stops. Unfortunately nobody agrees on what causes that. Some say that replacing the power supply is only temporary because the power supply is Deficient and has bad components on it and should be rebuilt with better part. I'm a licensed General contractor and have a great understanding of how thinks are put together, but certainly not a technician. I've read from one source that it a part on a board that's the problem and he is thinking about selling his idea for profit (I would pay) The bottom line is if it is the power supply someone should be able to supply a decent power supply that we could replace our self's and not have to ship it off to NJ every year.

How true and sadly, Panurgy (S. Perfetto) has now stated they are NOT in a position to replace motherboards or even repair them anymore. Its the old weakest link syndrome. We can upgrade all the power supplies and hard drives we want but if the MB is weak or fails, what good is it. What we need is an MB specialist or geek to figure out why these things are going south on us. Today my(working) PS is on its way to FTW for upgrading its caps. I am hoping this will be the safeguard my motherboard needs, but I don't sense anyone knows the answer to that. |

I just ordered a Escient DVDM-300 Fire ball for $75.00 on ebay Which is the machine that Mcintosh cloned. It's my hope that my computer Guru and I (I being the money) will practice on this machine . The owner claims that its a bad mother board but I have no expectations of that being accurate. I know that a MB is available. It should be interesting, I hate when I'm pissed off

This machine retailed for 4 to 5K I just want to take it apart. I was told that the mother board is an old computer mother board that's around. that why I bought this machine to find out what its made of. I would never treat my MS 300 with such disrespect

Hope you learn a lot from the disassembly, doc. I have seen the name Compaq used in connection with the main board in these units with an IBM type processor, but it would take a pro to see if that is correct. A number of us look forward to your findings and wish you luck.

Thanks! Just remember I have to first win the bid, Although nobody seems to be bidding on a dead unit. Then it should be in my possession on or about the 20th of January. Then let the fun begin
