I'm trying to decide between a new pair of Amati's, or Strad's. I like the sound of Amati's better, but the Strad is one good looking speaker. The Strad's are probably to big for my room, and I find it a little dark and heavy sounding, but did I say it's one good looking speaker.
The smart thing to do would just add a sub to my Elipsa and get the extra bottom end I want, but doing the smart thing is sometimes beyond my reach. |

Elipsa is a great speaker . You can't go wrong with the Amati's either.

David,
You are right. The Elipsa is a little faster and more agressive, which I like, but I do want a little fuller sound. Elipsa FR 35Hz-40kHz Amati FR 24Hz-30kHz Strad FR 22Hz-40kHz Getting into the 20's on the bottom is what I want, which I really could do by adding a new REL Stentor III. I will be at a place in Berkeley next week where some guys know these speakers real well, they might have some advice for me. |

Could you elaborate on that? Does Amati image better than Strad?

You should talk to Serge and Alberto, both have incorporated subs with the SF speakers. I am surprised that you feel you do not have enough bass, even my Cremona's have enough bass. When I heard the Elipsa's at the Dealer near me they sounded awesome.

I was comparing the specs. on my cremonas Stereophile: Sonus Faber Cremona loudspeaker to the new ones and the original cremonas have a wider freq. range from 32-40,000 Hz and according to the brochure on the new ones they are 40-30,000 Hz. Also the power handling is up to 300 watts for the original cremona's and 250 watts for the new ones. I wonder why Sonus Faber has gone in this direction ?

I dont think he was talking about a fullness of low end. I think He was talking about the measured frequency response. SGHT measured the Cremonas at about -10db @37hz. They go low, but there is a lot more low to go. At +-0db the Cremonas are at 60hz. As a note of comparison, the Watt Puppy 8 is rated a 21hz @ -3db.

I'd recommend 2 subs to help you deal with room modes - and make sure that you get to audition them before buying them. I tried several before finding the Rel T2s, one of the cheaper ones I tried to be the best match for the Homage. Serge (and many others) are big fans of JL Audio - and don't forget that Sonus Faber also makes a sub. It was too big for me, but I would have strongly considered it otherwise. Alberto |
