Default NAS Options

I’ve decided to get a NAS for:
1. Storing all my audio files,
2. Creating a ‘cloud on the ground’ storage service for all my photos and documents.
3. Creating a surveillance capability for multiple IP cameras.

It looks like Synology is the best bet, along with WD Red drives. Anyone have any experience or thoughts wrt this option?

Tom

Tom... that’s what I’m running; flawless performance over many years.

Just add a UPS back up of your choice.

I have two Synology NAS's with 40TB of storage each using Red Drives. They work great, no issues.

Synology makes some great devices for sure. If you’re running Roon or considering it for the future, Roon recommends QNAP. The Roon server application is optimized for the QNAP
operating system.

Sounds interesting. For those of you who have set up a NAS successfully and have made it through lessons learned, what are the recommended components and where to purchase? I have a 4TB built into the Aurender but use about half that. I should have a better way to back up the music than the iMac and a separate portable HD. Will also want to back up the iMac instead of relying the AirPort Extreme for that purpose.

WD red drives are very reliable and cheap. I’ll let others chime in on the rest of the hardware.

I’d highly recommend a strong backup plan though.

There may be better techniques, but the way I do it is as follows....

I use Raid Array 1 in my dual bay NAS to mirror drives, making it easy to get back up and running should either drive fail. I don’t rely on this alone as my back up!

I also back up my NAS drive(s) to a separate dual drive enclosure with two WD Red drives in the case of catastrophic failure of my NAS, which conceivably could take down both mirrored drives. If that happens, I simply restore two new drives in the NAS from incrementally backed up back-up drives.

One can’t be too careful!

In addition to the NAS, there’s the cloud. Slow, but pretty sure (unless amazon goes bankrupt). I do both.

I’ve been running a Synology 412+ with 4 x 3Tb Wd Red drives for about 5-1/2 years with no problems. The Synology apps are pretty good in general, with a good backup app, basic anti-virus, and file management. Their video/media and audio servers are meh, but that’s irrelevant if you already run Roon, and you can run Plex for video. For Roon I wouldn’t recommend running on the NAS anyway, better to use a dedicated device like Roon Nucleus, other Nuc, Mac mini or SonicTransporter.

As Mike pointed out, use Raid (Synology has its own Raid configuration which works very well) but also back up your data to external storage. I use the Synology Hyberbackup app to back up daily to an attached usb drive, and then back up critical files weekly to another usb drive I store in a detached garage. You could also use the cloud for this, but in general I think best practice is a daily incremental back up, and at least weekly to separate off-site storage.

Thanks gents - looks like I'm on the right track. Glad to see positive experiences with Synology and WD Red drives. With 8 drive slots I'll have plenty of options. I plan on using two slots for surveillance video and the four slots for audio with two pair of drives running Raid 1 or the Synology equivalent. That leaves a couple of open spots for other utility uses.

I'll figure out how to back up to a cloud service.
