I was introduced to Turtle records SACD's by Terry Menacker - owner of Overture - the audio store in Wilmington, DE. who used several of their recordings as demo discs when showing off his stuff.

The disc that "turned me on" was Sandrine Cantoreggi Playing Pietro Antonio Locatelli - unbelievable sonics, superior recoding quality, excellent performance of violin and orchestra. This is a true 'WOW" recording.

Warning - on anything but the very best equipment (which you have in spades Carlos) the violin will sound squeaky - but on your 20.7's it will sound like a signal from heaven.

Enter "Turtle Records" in the search box for this thread and several mini reviews will appear (mostly from me and from Bart) I also find the Liszt piano recordings to be absolutely amazing.

And, Carlos, thanks for the heads-up on the Newton Classics recordings. I'm going to look at their catalogue later today. Sounds like my kind of stuff !

Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra - Antal Dorati, Conductor

This record was in a stack of LP's recently given to me by a music lover who was moving out of the area and decided to "give up on vinyl". There were several other treasures among the 3 or 4 hundred LP's in the collection.

All Mercury Living Presence LP's were good, and this is no exception. Magnificently recorded by Wilma Cozart Fine. Little raucous for early in the morning and needs a little more volume than I can give it while others are sleeping, but the performance seems excellent. Will play it again later when I can turn the volume up.
Wow, what a treat!

Haydn: Piano Sonatas Nos. 29, 31, 34, 35, 49 - Emmanuel Ax on CD. Fairly quiet listening at an early hour on the left coast. Ax has a lovely light, airy touch and nice rhythm for this music.

Listening to . . . Mendelssohn — “Scotch” Symphony • Scherzo From Octet In E-Flat

Boston Symphony Orchestra - Charles Munch, conductor

An RCA Living Stereo LP

I think our friend, Bob at Sea is very much correct - Munch does a great job with the Boston and this, not often heard, symphony is lovely under his baton.

Thanks Bob for reminding me that I should listen to some Munch.

Based on posted listening tastes, I doubt that many (or any!) members of this forum would even consider this music! Perhaps it isn't in the traditional sense, but I have to give Cerha credit for some very imaginative textures. I'd say slow-moving clusters would pretty well sum it up--along the lines of Xenakis, early Penderecki, and Ligeti. "Spiegel" lasts 90 minutes;"Momentum" and "Momente" are 20ish minutes. It's best to just let the sounds wash over one...listening for melodies and rhythms is pointless! Excellent sound, and one of the few that successfully immerses the listener in surround sound.

Thanks, Julian. I'm going to start with the Locatelli SACD you recommend. It will be new music and a new label for me.

Be prepared for some stratospheric high notes! Really, it's almost impossible to determine a pitch for some of them. (That's Locatelli's writing, not a shortcoming of the violinist nor the engineer.)

John, I do love Penderecki.
So I'm going to try this.

First I'm going to listen to my copy of this.

Hugh Distler - Variations
Johann Sebastian Bach - Concerto a due Combali BWV 1061a

This lady not only looks good, but she plays the harpsichord amazingly well and Turtle Records' recordings are among the very best.

Hay Bart . . . Are Van Immerseel and his Anima Eterna orchestra your home boys? Looks like they hail from Bruges They are good!
She knows indeed how to play the instrument.

Cerha is less abrasive, and frankly, less interesting than Penderecki! Here's a sample from the recording:
