Transcriptions by Bach (Cello Suite No. 5) and Dunford himself (Cello Suite No. 1 & Violin Partita, the Chaconne).
Ideal music for a Sunday morning.
The lute brings me in a quiet meditative state.

This was playing into the waiting room today.
I really like these transcriptions.
The Chaconne is such a wonderful piece...

I'm used to hearing these Sonatas with harpsichord or piano, but the pipe organ certainly adds interesting sororities. Masterful playing and excellent sound, including some foundation-rattling bass in the slow movements!

Bach - Complete Suites for Unaccompanied Cello
Quinine Viersen
via Qobuz

I'm following this Dutch cellist since a while.
And the producer also: Bert van der Wolf (Spirit of Turtle - Challenge Records).

This recording also exists in multichannel.

Gabriel Fauré - Piano Quartet No. 1
Mel Bonis - Piano Quartet No. 1
Quatuor Giardini
Qobuz 24/48

After having heard them with Jodie Devos (post above), I wanted to explore more into their discography.

Mélanie Bonis was unknown to me until today.

This is another album in a splendid series of Debussy music + contemporary colleagues.

I played this in my practice today.
The Messiaen might have been a tad too hefty for sick people.

Ignaz von Beecke - Two String Quartets - Piano Quintet
Diogenes Quartett
Andreas Kirpal

via Qobuz

New release. And world premiere recordings.
I always like to discover new names.
This is a very pleasant surprise.
‘...uncommonly lovely and ingratiating to the ear’ says the booklet, and it is really so.
Makes me think of Mozart.
The 2 met:

Von Beecke composed more than 300 works.

Ahead of receiving the new BIS SACD of the Resurrection that the Minnesota Orchestra recorded in June 2017 after a series of live performances which I attended (marvelous), I listened to this....

Mahler: Symphony No. 2 'Resurrection'
Barbara Hendricks & Christa Ludwig
The Westminster Choir & New York Philharmonic, Leonard Bernstein

A live recording captured by an excellent DG recording. The brass and the percussion are impressive.

From a previous posting:
Quote:
Bernstein indulges in dragging out some of the more dramatic parts of the symphony (Simon Rattle does similar tricks with the BPO), but it works for him.

The finale (after the Urlicht movement) is especially compelling. The orchestra makes a "hell of a lot of fine noises" like our friend Julian would say .

Good stuff.

Her hair on fire playing won't be to all tastes, but I finding it thrilling. It's nice to hear someone play with so much passion and individuality. Superb sound, too.
