Felix Woyrsch - Symphonies 4 & 5 - Faust
NDR Radiophilharmonie, Thomas Dorsch
via Qobuz

Although he delivered most of his works after WW1, like these pieces, it sounds remarkably 19th century.
Nice music, but I will not listen to it a second time.

Very powerful and intense, yet tuneful and tonal.

Everyone is familiar with these performances, but I was curious to see if Esoteric could improve on the less-than-stellar recorded sound quality of these recordings. After listening twice my impression is that the character of the 1970s DG recording remains, but Esoteric has been able to decrease / eliminate most of the sonic congestion that marred the earlier releases. This opens up the sounds allowing me to better connect emotionally to these performances.

The results are better for the 5th which comes across as more vivid and intense particularly the resplendent brass in the 3rd and 4th movement. The 7th sounds darker to my ears, so the improvement in sound quality is not as good, but I'm still glad to have it.

I paid $51 for this disc. Since it's one of the classics of the gramophone and the performances are top-notch, I found the investment to be worth the expense.

Here is the marketing material:
Has anyone compared the Esoteric SACD to DG's SACD? I have the latter--it certainly sounds better than the RBCD iteration.

Qobuz 24/44.1

From Beethoven's time.

Wonderful transcriptions of Schubert lieder and the Arpeggione Sonata. Typically lush, atmospheric ECM sound.

I have both of these versions. I’ll do a side-by-side comp and report back.

Nielsen: Flute Concerto, FS119
Nielsen: Symphonies Nos. 1-6
Nielsen: Symphony No. 1 in G minor, Op. 7 (FS16)
Nielsen: Symphony No. 2, Op. 16 (FS29) 'The Four temperaments'
Nielsen: Symphony No. 3, Op. 27 (FS60) 'Sinfonia espansiva'
Nielsen: Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 (FS76) 'The Inextinguishable'
Nielsen: Symphony No. 5, Op. 50 (FS97)
Nielsen: Symphony No. 6, (FS116) 'Sinfonia semplice'
Nielsen: Violin Concerto, Op. 33 (FS61)
Erin Morley (soprano) & Joshua Hopkins (baritone), Nikolaj Znaider (violin), Robert Langevin (flute), Anthony McGill (clarinet)

So far I've heard the concertos and very much enjoyed them. The recorded sound is quite good.

Hi Carlos, I also ordered this set.
It was offered for a ridiculously low price.
Looking forward to receiving it.

Streaming it now (Qobuz 24/96).
Indeed powerful.
I'll need something less energetic to end the evening, but I'm surely going to listen to more of his works.
