Does my HK Coronet receiver (circa 1960) currently under restoration by Terry DeWick count as high-end? Plan to use its screaming 15wpc of 6L6 power to drive a pair of Cornwalls.

I have dipped into this thread a couple of times and, each time, what stops me from contributing is that elusive definition of "hi-end." Over the 60 years that I have been playing with this stuff, my definition of it has changed often and, now, is indeterminate.

C'mon, Kal.............. let us know what you listen(ed) to. What was 'high-end' back then is absolutely 'indeterminate' today.

I'm guessing that the first commercial "hi-end" component that I bought was a Klyne 6LE preamp. Before that, I built most of my equipment and, before that, I built kits. Actually, I eventually replaced the Klyne with a new home built preamp.

B&O turntable -> then Krell Int, a set of 802s, a Sony ES SACD with some Grado Headphones.
Before this I used my father's Mac Turntable - without his knowledge. Finally got caught and my parents bought me a cassette deck with radio (unknown name). My mom still uses the radio portion to this day...

Hi-end?! If JBL 4311B is so considered then it was almost 35 years ago otherwise, I guess, couple years ago when I bought a beautiful Michell Gyrodec MKI and an Audio Research SP9 along with a Kiseki step-up transformer which will probably be sold to fund some tubes or some high current power amp.

My first high-end kit I owned was a turntable system: A SOTA Sapphire with Premier MMT arm and Talisman S cartridge. I got the SOTA super mat and clamp with it. I got this around 1983. The Talisman was replaced with a Benz around 2001.
My first audiophile kit I owned that started the upgrade path was a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 10s around 1981. I remember going into the local stereo saloon and the salesman asked me if I ever heard the Mark Levinson gear? He hooked them up with a pair of Polk 10s and convinced me that up the chain was where the magic started. Their standard demo source was a Linn LP12 system. I later bought the speakers and eventually the SOTA. |

While still at Cornell in 1974-75 I put together what I would call my first complete "hi-end" stereo consisting of a Dayton Wright SPM preamp, an ESS 100 stereo power amp, ESS Heil AMT-5 speakers, an ERA turntable fitted with a Transcriptors Vestigial tonearm (slightly modified) with an ADC XLM cartridge. The AMT-5's were the first hi-end purchase that led to the rest with the ESS 100 being a good sounding match with the Heils.
Sounded awful good to me at the time.
