Can a SUT plug directly to a Line Input?
Maybe a strange question but what can i expect by plugging in an SUT to the SE line input of a headphone amp? Will this work or do I still need a separate phono preamp?
My plan: Garrard 301 > A23 SUT > Bryston BHA-1 > Headphones Will I be or in this setup? Not only am I still new to vinyl, now I'm getting into headphones which is another new territory for me.

Jayson.......A typical step up transformer for a MC phono cartridge has no provisions for the RIAA equalization curve. In most cases a SUT will feed into a moving magnet phono stage input.

Ok, i thought there would be a rub but know nothing about RIAA equalization curves. Guess I need to start looking for a phono stage to complement my setup as the Massetto will eventually sell. Thanks!

RIAA equalization is a form of pre-emphasis on recording and de-emphasis on playback. A recording is made with the low frequencies reduced and the high frequencies boosted, and on playback the opposite occurs. The net result is a flat frequency response, but with attenuation of high frequency noise such as hiss and clicks that arise from the recording medium. Reducing the low frequencies also limits the excursions the cutter needs to make when cutting a groove. Groove width is thus reduced, allowing more grooves to fit into a given surface area, permitting longer recording times. This also reduces physical stresses on the stylus which might otherwise cause distortion or groove damage during playback. This is why you must connect a SUT to the moving magnet phono stage of your preamplifier rather than a line level input.
