I bought the P-5ex used, of course, so I don’t know how long it went without power. But when I first fired it up and played a record, my impression was that of too much bass emphasis. A day later, all the recordings I played exhibited well balanced detailed bass. This morning I replayed Kind of Blue, a recording in which I previously heard excessive bass, but the bass was well balanced and detailed. I can only conclude that the initial bass emphasis was a result of the phonostage being without power for some period of time. It uses only 10 watts, so there is no on/off switch, and I assume it’s aimed at 24/7 power.

Almost everything Ayre makes will show better characteristics after it's been settled in and ran in one place for a period of time due partially to having no feedback. You'll even hear changes when moving cables around and letting them resettle. The units that have been powered down for months or longer show this a lot more, particularly in the electrolytic capacitors. Your unit will likely continue to improve over the next week or so. I hope you enjoy it!

Thanks, Ryan, I am enjoying it, but not as much as Roon through the QX-5/20. Both the P-5xe and QX-5/20 use balanced input to a KX-5/20 & VX-5/20. Speakers are KEF Ref 1s supplemented by a pair of Velodyne HGS-10s low-passed at 40 Hz with 6 dB slope by a SMS-1 bass manger that also provides LF acoustic room correction.
