More rookie lessons:

There is no image stabilization on the 23mm. That makes hand shake more of an issue. The kit 18-55mm does have image stabilization, which may lead you to be too cavalier about hand shaking softening your focus.

The sharpest focus will be f4.0, with f2.8 and f5.6 close seconds. When set on automatic, the camera tends to a wide aperture. You may need to stop down (narrow) the aperture a bit to lessen hand shake/focus issues.

The aperture ring on the lens is easily bumped off the detents. That means you may think you have it on "A," but it is really on f16. Always look.

Stop beating yourself up. The pics were perfect for their intended use.

LOL. Craig, I am not beating myself up - I have moved on. But I did want to learn why the kit lens (15-55mm) and the portrait lens (56mm) were so much easier to shoot than the 23mm.

I document my errors in these hobbies to let others learn from my mistakes. Since I make so many errors, I like to think that I am somewhat of a resource.

Well, I went nuts and bought the Fujinon 55-140mm f2.8 zoom, which brings me to one body and 4 lenses. That brings up the problem of a good bag to haul the gear. Anyone have a recommendation of a bag? Should I take 4 lenses on vacation? There is some overlap between the 23mm, the 56mm, the 18-55 zoom, and the 50-140mm zoom. My brain says just take the zooms. My heart says if you leave the fast lenses at home you will regret it. What say ye?
