And now for something completely different
I'm looking to put some speakers on my Cape patio, driven by a Sonos ZP120. Considering Boston Acoustics Voyager series.
Suggestions welcome.

Not even Sonus Faber mini Elipsa?
Those Boston Acoustics should be good. I've always been impressed with their stuff. Also Check out Triad if they make that type. I like their warm mids, punchy bass, non-fatiguing highs and use their in-ceiling speakers. |

I use the Niles OS 7.5 speakers on my elevated deck driven by my MAC4300V receiver. I have a second pair for the deck under the house that are driven by a Sonos ZP120. They sound very good, with decent bass response. They come in black or white. Both pairs of mine are in black.

Ivan glad to see you embrace the sonos for your main level of your house. It may sound crazy but when I am in my backyard and pool I listen to pandora most of the time.

Klipschfan,
I've got a pair of those. After baking in the sun and freezing in the winter for 6 years, I was thinkin' it's time for a change. But before went back to the little gems I had in on the ocean, I decided to modify . I used 3 layers of "Hushmat" on the back of the horns and stuffed the baffle crosshatch and cabinet ribs with about roughly 12 lbs of duct seal (non hardening modeling clay will do the trick too). I used the rest of the hushmat on the inside top. I also packed the xover in ds. I stuffed the rest of it with a homebrew filler made of .125" rubber mat sandwiched in between some open cell poly. The result? The cabinet resonances were RADICALLY dampened. All the flowery superlatives some might use to describe an expensive new piece of equipment apply. And then some. These puppies punch WAY above their weight. A significant amount of that energy that was pressing up against the backside of the drivers is gone. Additionally, I have can't overemphasize that these speakers had been subjected to an exceptionally harsh environment for about 6 years. Aside from some minor cabinet depolymerisation, the drivers stood up to the neglect spectacularly. Now, I take them indoors in the winter as I intend to keep them until the cabinets turn to dust. This is a simple mod that will take the average Joe $20 and a couple hours on the kitchen table to execute. There are some details I left out, so if you want to try this, I'd be happy to assist. |

Jack.......I may have to give this a try with my Niles OS 7.5 speakers. It is an interesting approach to damping the cabinets. Thanks for the idea.

I use Bose for my outdoor speakers. The deer seem to enjoy them.

The exteriors of mine got chalky - I didn't paint them, and in retrospect I should have. The grills are removable if you want to paint them (and of course go back through the grill with a paper clip or pin to remove an paint clogging the holes). The sound is decent, OK - they would sound better, for you Ivan, being under cover on the patio. Mine are completely out in the open. And I am driving them this year with a ZP120. |
