Default I'm looking for a set of headphones

Hello everyone I would like to buy a good set of headphones. Until joining here I thought $100 was a lot for headphones now it appears its 1-2K... Anyways I'm after something durable and made in Europe or Japan, it would be nice if it was stylish too but that is optional. I will consider up to $1300 as thats what Beyerdynamic T1s cost but would prefer to pay around $500 or so for a good pair.

Also what is the life expectancy for a set of headphones if properly maintained? I noticed on one review that some of the cords can be replaced but what about other components? I have no problem spending a lot so long as the product is durable and will last me a long time.

welcome to AA lord sere

A few questions:

1) What will you be playing the headphones through (phono jack on a receiver/integrated amp, a stand-alone headphone amp)?

2) Will you be using this mostly at home or does it need to be portable? If portable, again will you have a dedicated headphone amp or will you be using something like an iPod?

I ask because I would not spend anywhere near $1300 for phones if you will be using an iPod/iPhone or the phono jack on a reciever. You just won't hear what 'phones at this level will be capable of. If you have a high quality headphone amp (at home or portable) then there are many options for you to consider in the $400-$1300 range.

Here is a guide that may be a good place for you to start reading up on options, but I would also get back to us and let us know the ancillary equipment and how you will be using the 'phones so you can get releveant suggestions: http://media.avguide.com/full_size_h...yers_guide.pdf

An good amp is a must if you spend good money on an expensive headphones. I have the T1 and I must say that it is King in my collection. I pre-ordered the Beyer T70 and it should be here end of this month. It's the new $500 Telsa tech headphones from Beyer.

I'll be using them for a Sony ICF-SW7600GR shortwave radio, Technics RS-T22 cassette deck, and Philips 338 recorder. It needs to be portable as I take the radio out occasionally.

I'll have a look at the guide.
