Akg k702
Taking the afternoon off, went for a stroll in local HiFi Mecca - The Adelphi.
Chance upon the local dealer for AKG, Thorens, Gamut & JM Labs. Saw this last NIB AKG K702 selling at half the price. Was told this is the Pro version of the K701 which Quincy Jones used to record the "We Are The World" - USA For Africa album. Plus this is Designed, Engineered & Made in Austria. The difference between the K701 and this K702 was that the K701 had fixed cable while this is with a detachable professional cable of choice. In fact, fellow audiophiles told me that this is even better than the Sennheiser 800 I was looking at with a VERY attractive price due to the shop's closure. Since I am looking for a set of headphones, I just bought it. S$650 (US$523). I am going to use this via the Leben CS300XS in due time. Anyone care to share that what I was told was the truth and this is indeed a good set of headphones? As usual, I am seeking Dan's help to post the picture as somehow I had difficulty in uploading the pictures, not only to this site but to other's too. Cheers! P/S - Dan, as usual, Thanks.

Here's my unboxing of the K701 & K702. I wouldn't go as far as better than the HD800, but they are good when paired with a good amp. So far, I found them to be best with Musical Fidelity X-Can V8 (Dan recommended). The Q701 is the Quincy Jones version which is said the be no more than just a color change. I don't know because I don't have one. I may get it in the near future.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the info. Indeed Qunicy Jones Q701 is EXACTLY the same as the K701's as confirmed by "headphone fantatic fans" friends here except like you said a different marketing cosmetics. As for better or equal to the HD800's, for sure, I have heard only the K601's and the HD800's. I like what I heard on the K601's so, plonk the monies down as its a good bargain .... (right?) as against the HD800 which costs way more. In fact, my initial plan was to get the HD800 as was told it matches real well with the Leben CS300Xs integrated amp - way better than even the Lehmann Audio headphone amp which was supposedly a "made in heave match", which I recently acquired. Anyway, I am no headphone fan so, the K702 is good enough for me. Its soft, comfortable and bears "no weight" on the head and pressure on the ears. Moreover, its for late night listening when I cant "blast" the new Meridian DSP8k.2's. Once again, thanks for the You Tube links. I really enjoyed the show and amazes at how you are collecting headphones ..... Its a new knowledge to me that headphones collecting can be passionate as well. Cheers! Quote:

I love the Lehmann Audio BCL amp. I love it so much I bought TWO. One in silver, one in black. The Lehmann doesn't pair well with the K701 IMO. I have not had a chance to hear the Leben. I hope to in the near future.

This amp is really really good with the K701. Even with the stock tubes. I bought a pair of Gold Lion, but have not installed it because I am actually enjoying the stock tubes very much with the K701

in the beginning, I listed the Lehmann BC Headphone Amp + Sennheiser HD800 as a combo BUT the dollars outlay held me back as I cant find a reasonable reason/excuse to tell my wife why I have to have that.
But when I, on impulse, acquired the Leben CS300X(s) Integrated amplifier, I thought that sooner or later, the pair of HD800 would come home with me. Its just a matter of when. But with this so called attractive pricing (you never told me if what I paid for it is indeed good - as I dont know well enough), I just signed on the dotted line yesterday and brought it home. So far, so good. All quiet in the front! But for sure, I do like what I have heard on the K601's, so being a higher model (they wont allow me to test it as its the last sealed boxed up piece), assumption it had to be better. Cheers!
