If you were to go the way of separates, you may find used preamps for great prices just because they may lack the latest features. Also, you can find used amps that pretty much will hold their value. So in the long term, buying used and separate preamp and amps are your value proposition.

Yes, this makes a lot of sense to me. There do appear to be a lot of surround sound processors available used for reasonable prices. I guess as one would expect given your point, there are fewer surround sound amps.
