After receiving a couple of quotes (for the cost of a nice piece of stereo gear) for the installlation of 56' of cedar fence (on my existing posts), I bought 7x 8' sections of same from HD. Took about 2hr to put up the fence with my wife's occasional help to hold level while I ran in a 3" deck screw using the amazing Ridgid 12-Volt Hyper Lithium-Ion drill (life-time warranty). The 4x4 posts were too tall for the new fence so I borrowed a friend's Sawzall (Sears 19.2V model) to cut them off. Had not used one before and was most pleasantly surprised with how easily & quickly it cut thru the 9 posts that needed trimming. Time spent of well under an hour, with as much time being spent letting my trigger finger & forearm recover from the very strong trigger spring (think safety) as running the saw. Highly recommend a Sawzall for such work. Think it could replace the chainsaw for anything under about 8-9" in diameter.

Good stuff, I have a small fence around my AC units that needs replacing. After getting quotes (big enough to build a tool shed) I think I'll do it myself also.

Will also give me a chance to break out some new tools I have.

You'll be surprised how handy that small portable Bosch drill is. Was able to drive 28 of the 3" long deck screws on a single battery, which is pretty good for their small size. No problem having the power to do so once the clutch was tightened to 10 (of 12). Would likely have been good for several more screws, but I needed an iced tea, so tossed it in the charger.

Make sure you use torx #25 decking screws. They are stronger than stainless and won't rust and their heads won't break off or strip under high torque.

I agree the torx #25 are best, the square drive stainless next and anything with a Phillips head, avoid that the Plague.

OT but FWIW, I'm redoing the crown molding in the house and this makes the job much easier, IMHO.

Yes. That is what I used and the correct torx driver bit was included in the box of screws. Worked great and not a hint of a stripped head.

Good news on the failed battery (life-time warranty - purchased 04/10). Ridgid said to take the warranty registration & battery to HD and they will take care of it. Now if HD will be as amenable as Ridgid.
