In classical, you have to have a copy of Tchaikovsky's Overture of 1812. Grammophon (German) makes one of the best on CD. Anything by Grommophon is usually good quality. Or Phillips.
Rossini's Overture of William Tell. You'll recognize several of its themes even if you've never heard it. Also a must have - George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. Written to be a synopsis of American music at the time - big band, orchestral, jazz, blues. Some remakes of the '58 recording with Gershwin on piano with the New York Philharmonic are heavy with noise (Sony) but there are some remasters of the original 2 and 3 channel analog recordings coming out right now on both LP and SACD. We'll see what they can do with those old recordings made on funky equipment. No snoozing music in any of the above. This doesn't mean I'm not into the early rock - Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Who, late Beatles, etc, although most of the metal is after my time. Don't forget Moody Blues. |

Guys, the nightfly is indeed some of the best music ever. Fagen is a genius. However, I am disappointed that none of the versions I've heard had any bass. It's pretty much all bass-free. Disturbing.
