I have to agree to a certain extent, and am curious if Bill might answer this...why not port on the bottom like many other designs? This seems (in theory at least) to solve both performance and aesthetic concerns. Not so easy in practice perhaps?

Because in some rooms porting to the front will provide better results and in others porting to the rear will. This is the exact same technique they started using with the XLF and it has worked out very well for them. One size does not fit all rooms.
