That was a fun watch. I’m most familiar with the Studer A80 as I tested that machine extensively. It was so far superior to the Scully, Otari, Technics, and Ampex decks in the early 80’s that it was really just no contest. The audio performance was superb, the mechanics without peer. For example, you could be in fast forward or rewind, full tilt, and pull the power plug. The machine would just slowly come to stop with no drama. I did that with the Otari MX 5050 and it filled the room with tape.

A80 is a beauty Tom. Very high quality machine from what I understand but I have no personal experience with them.

Interesting that even over youtube, one can appreciate the relaxed analog sound of tape. https://youtu.be/YZznnBKy5ks

If (big if) I were to get back into tape I’d get a B67 or an A80 or something like that. The problem is finding one that has been lightly used as a hi-fi deck and not one abused daily in a studio.

Well if your “if” becomes a when, try Techtrader. His name is Urs and he has an incredible inventory of Studer and Revox decks that he completely rebuilds. I acquired my PR-99 mkiii from him and couldn’t be happier. Not inexpensive, and he is in Switzerland. I looked along while for a deck and love where my search took me.

There's a reason I have 3 perfectly working RTR's in my listening room.

Just scored a 7.5ips studio release of Tchaikovsy's "Swan Lake." Can't wait for it to arrive. The J.S. Bach Brandenburg Concertos set that came in the other day are utterly superb.
