Hi
I play my Ref5 with CD8 and Ref150 based on XLR canling and 5-12 is standard volume. I checked RCA and it is much more lower volume - the standard is changing to 12-20.
so maybe it is the standard? 50 on XLR connection I never reached:-) - 35 was too much.

Volume level of 50 on my Ref 5 SE is too loud with the Ref 210 amps on my system. Speakers are 95db sensitivity.

I find 22 to 32 the optimum range, depending on the recording.

For relaxed listening I set my Ref 5 SE between 20 - 25. For louder sessions 30 - 40. Don't believe (recall) having set the volume higher than 45.

Call ARC and ask to speak with Kalvin. Describe the situation and he should be able to help you. I have never had an issue with ARC preamps...have 3... I do find that the Ayre KX-R and Moon 850 have less gain than ARC but I have never had a range issue...

qualifier...i have never used with BAT amps

Or are using the fixed tape output rather than mains.

Default I solved my "problem"..

Actually it turned out that I had “problem” with only two sources that I mainly listen to mostly at night – Magnum Dynalab FM tuner(tried McIntosh MR88 as well) and MD Satellite receiver. I changed the output from these 2 sources to unbalanced (RCA) and the volume level became acceptable.

Now after midnight the following volume levels are acceptable:

Tuner(SE) – 2
Satellite(SE) – 2
CD Player (BAL) – 1
Turn Table via Sutherland 20/20 (SE) – 3
My listening position is 7 ft. from Tweeter to Ear.
This close range listening position and “mismatch” between the Ref5(SE) and BAT VK-600SE must be a contributing factor. Mind you at daytime these volume levels are set at twice and sometimes much higher levels.
One of these days I will connect McIntosh Amp and see what the outcome is.

Default AMP Input Sensitivity specs.

I finally managed to get hold of Victor (Designer) at BAT. He gave me these numbers - Gain 26 Db. and Voltage Sensitivity 1.5Volt RMS. He asked me a few questions and felt that there is very good match between Ref 5se and the BAT 600Se. He feels the sources is where my poblem may lie.

To some who posted about wrong hook ups. There is no problem there.
