I have been using a P-5xe for five years with balanced input. If your cartridge can run balanced and the arm wiring supports or can be changed to support balanced it is preferable to single-ended.

Agreed D_elm. I'm wondering if we'll be seeing a new phono stage from them as soon as they get all their new digital stuff out.

Has anyone had better luck with the P5xe than I did?

Bill, I decided to go in a different direction and bought an Aesthetix Rhea. Sounds awesome, but I want to sell it I think as I just can't do tubes anymore. It's a great preamp and the most flexible I've ever seen for phono, but I just want to simplify things I think. I'm still upset I sold my Heed Quasar, lol. I hope Ayre does come up with a new phono stage as I will be killer I'm sure.

Bill,

I've had the P5xe for two years now. When I first installed it into my system, it was bright and mechanical. But over time, as it broke in, the sound grew softer and much more musical. The P5xe is detailed and dynamic. I am extremely pleased.

I still like my P5xe very much. I'm often surprised at the synergy between the P5xe and my Ayre pre and power amps. This is a terrific union that I have no reason to change.

I've ordered an Ortofon 2M Black cartridge for a Technics 1200 SL Mk2. Would a P5xe be a good phonostage for that cartridge? I'm currently using a Parasound JC 3 phonostage with a JC 2 BP preamp and JC 1 monoblocks, but I may move the TT to my Ayre setup with KX-5 and VX-5 Twentys.

For me the P-5xe hum generation is dependant on position of the unit in my cabinet. Where it is now there is no hum but if I move it there is. One should try a demo unit at home before purchasing to be sure hum is not a problem.

My Technics SL-1200 Mk2 with Ortofon Black cartridge passes through a P-5xe to KX-5/20 and VX-5/20 to KEF Ref 1s supplemented by a pair of Velodyne HGS-10s with SMS-1 bass manager. The setup throws a large soundstage with good imaging but perhaps a bit too much bass.

I played a 45 rpm Time Out and 33 Let It Bleed, vinyl bought from Acoustic Sounds. The soundstage was large and the bass was detailed and well balanced. So the setup seems fine. At some point, I expect to use the P-5xe with my Thorens TD 124 with SME III arm and 30H cartridge.
