While the HT/multi-channel system sounds pretty good with the Sony AVR as a pre/pro, I want to upgrade the sound. At $3k, the NAD seemed like a good fit, but I am not trying any more of them. Other than buying another AVR and using it as a pre/pro I am not sure of what other options I have in that price range. |

BlueFox.......That type of experience can get frustrating. I use a McIntosh MX120 pre/pro in my HT system and can recommend its performance. I sounds excellent. I don't use the DAC's in it for processing. I take the Blu-ray player analog outputs straight to my MX120, then to the amps. I let the Blu-ray player perform the decoding of movie codecs. I let the MX120 switch the HDMI video inputs and it does decode the Dolby multi-channel from DirecTV satellite receiver through a fiber optic connector. The MX120 can be purchased pre-owned for right at $3000. In fact there is one on Audiogon right now that looks clean from the original owner. Perhaps you may want to consider the McIntosh MX120. I sure like mine.

That is something to consider. Thanks. Although now I am inclined to skip the HT upgrade and go crazy by buying 2 Classe CT-M600 amps. I only use the HT occasionally for music versus everyday with the stereo.

Just as a follow up on this issue, I did some more research, and decided to get an Onkyo 5509. This easily outweighs the NAD, has balanced outputs should I upgrade cables, cost $500 less, and is dead quiet. Which is exactly how a preamp should operate with no input. I just finished setting it up, and the very tentative first impression is there is more detail compared to the Sony DA7100ES I was using as a pre. I need to get more familiar with it, let it burn in, and then evaluate it. Right now my neighbors are having an outside birthday party for their kid, and the adult portion will last until late at night. So, it is hard to critically sonically evaluate anything.
