Thumbs up Bach & Mozart Boxed Sets

As I built my system last year I invested more in music than any other 12-18 month period. I bought the complete works of Bach and Mozart on CD, each of which cost something in the range of $100-$125 on Amazon or Costco.com. These CDs (155 for Bach, 170 for Mozart) are 6-7 days' worth of continuous music each.

Many of the CDs are reissues of previously-recorded material, but packaged together for completeness. I had a number of CDs of Mozart's more popular works, but not much Bach, and was curious about both composers' less-known work. Since they're now loaded on my server, it's a real treat to play tracks that haven't been played there before and truly enjoy something that's almost completely new to me; for example, Bach's Cantatas are incredible examples of well-measured joyfulness.

My 13-year-old likes to listen to these when he's reading and not getting mind-numbed by Metallica, which gives me hope!

These boxed sets are truly incredible bargains, and well worth it to any classical music fans. Think about it - the two of them composed such a volume of incredible music, and you can basically buy both boxed sets for roughly the same amount as the Beatles' 13-disc mono box set coming out this week. Not to put down the Beatles (I'm a big fan), but they can't compete in many ways to the likes of Bach and Mozart.

+1. The Great Masters are still favorites and survive the test of time.
Maybe your 13 year old might be open to Liszt, Chopin,Strauss,Mendelssohn,& Chopin too? Just to mention a few....

Absolutely. He plays piano and I've bought some Chopin & Liszt sheet music for him when he's ready. On the topic of Liszt, there's a couple CDs by Indrek Laul entitled "My Favorite Liszt" that we really enjoy. A native of Tallinn & Julliard grad, he's the president of the Estonia Piano Company as well as a concert pianist by trade.
