ARC has a known problem with Apple right now. Talk to Kalvin Dahl at ARC.

This may be a bit of a long shot but could help if one loves the sound of their ARC; you may want to see if you can audition those USB 'bridge' cables such as from Halide Design/Audiophilleo/etc.
The cheapest may be the Halide Design but still several hundred dollars/pounds (but it is a complete solution meaning cables and bridge conversion)
S/PDIF Bridge | USB to SPDIF cable | USB DDC
Audiophilleo2 - low jitter USB SPDIF transport,converter

Note; You will need to check the specs though and your needs, as an example the Halide only does up to 96khz.

These would mean using USB on the Macbook to S/PDIF on the CD or DAC.
But long shot and worth checking it does what you need if nothing else is working for you.
Cheers and good luck
