I assumed they didn't know in the first place.

That's what they claim. Then it becomes a QC issue. I believe both Linn and HD Tracks (Chesky) have enough skin in the game that we may see an improvement. I doubt refunds are forthcoming!

You have listed all of the ones I have book marked on my laptop.

Maybe later we can list Hi-Rez downloads that have proven to be worthwhile.

Jim,
That would be a pretty long list for me. I am so ready for Hirez to actually take off! My best recordings, by far, come from High Def Tape Transfer (HDTT). I have nearly all of their offerings and can't recall being disappointed with any. Now their online store and download process is absurd/archaic. That would be my only gripe with them.

Linn Records on the other hand has the online process down pretty much. Not all of their recordings are of the same quality, they actually warehouse for other labels as well. The ones that are good are outstanding. For example, anything from violinist Rachel Podger has proven a great purchase for me.

The fact that HDTT controls the entire transcoding process would probably explain my high satisfaction rate. I'll go through my tracks to see which ones stand out.

I noticed you are using Amarra + Mac Pro with SSD for hires files. How does it sound compared your TT or other CD players you have tried in the past?

My ideal source will be MacBook Pro + SSD + Amarra, thus I'm interested in your perspective on this.

Tommy, I like the combo quite a bit. I could probably up my game with respect to the DAC I'm using, but the synergies are compelling. Don't get me wrong, the Metric Halo is no slouch and it is there for LP archiving. The MacPro + Amarra combo throttles most CD players that I've owned (Ayre, Naim, T+A). If you can use an optimized/dedicated computer it will make a big difference. Dedicated only while you're listening is the key.

I currently have a mid level TT and it smokes digital so bad! I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it with my own two ears. Archiving from the TT sounds noticeably better than most Hirez that's currently out there.

I think they both have a place in today's setups. Spinning LP's is anything but set and forget, where I can play an infinite amount of digital music with next to no effort. Hope this helps.

I just wanted to let you know that the Hi-Rez downloads on Masters From Their Day | Home were not upsampled. They were originally recorded and mixed at those sample-rates, and when they were mastered, the mastering engineer kept it at that sample-rate. The 44/16 version (also available as a free download) was made by down-sampling the hi-rez version.

In fact, the first recording has all the individual instrument tracks available from the original recording session. You can hear each instrument, unprocessed, at 88/24.

Enjoy!

Added "Physical disc" category as some hi-res music only come in disc form.
