Yes, you are right. I did try the XP30 also but in my system I thought the Ayre was better.

I prefer the XP-30 to the KX-R in my system, different strokes I guess. The KX-R has a bit too much treble energy for my taste. Besides, I think the KX-R has been replaced by the KX-R Twenty, MSRP $27,500.

I know what you mean about treble energy. In my system, I found the Pass units a tad restrained and veiled whereas the Ayre let the details come through without any hardness. Probably just system synergy or room matching ( or more likely my ageing ears needing some extra high frequency boost!) |

System synergy does play a big role. The XP-30 is made to match with the XA-100.8, just like the KX-R is made to match with the MX-R. My ears are a bit fickle too and very sensitive to treble energy.
I'm sure the KX-R Twenty is a tremendous preamp. It's just unfortunate they had to raise the price point so much, $27,500 and $9,000 to upgrade is pretty expensive. I saw a nice review on it though. I found the KX-R to beat the XP-20 handily, and while I haven't heard the XP-30 the KX-R Twenty, while substantially more expensive, is an absolutely huge leap forward, IMHO.
