Pyro, How many feet of CAT6 can be run while maintaining 'fidelity'? Can it be run outside? One of my options is to run about 50' of cable to connect my NAS to the Silenzio around the outside of my home. The other is to drill holes...

Quality cable will cost you. The cheapest route for me is no router or switches in the chain. Then add a good network cable. Running the cable outside may not be a good idea due to temperature and humidity differences between inside and outside. |

I am running a 100' of CAT6 indoors to the router. I could easily connect it to the NAS (assuming there is a second port), but I was expressly advised to connect each of Silenzio and NAS separately to the router. Now I am confused ...

Jim, I would be as helpless as a kitten in traffic without Emile (Audio by E). He has been amazingly supportive, patient and helpful.

Not trying to confuse you. Just like with a direct audio path, having a direct data path is the best way to go. However based on each of our needs/configurations a router may be needed.

No worries my friend. Since it is working well, I will leave it as is for now and "tweak" later. The NAS sits next to the router so it will be easy enough to try.

That recommendation is far from best practices.

Mystery solved - Each of Silenzio and my particular NAS have only one ethernet (LAN) port. If I connect Silenzio directly to the NAS by ethernet cable, my Silenzio would have to wirelessly access the internet. Given my crappy wi-fi connect speeds, a hard-wire connection of each to the router is better. Also, my configuration contemplates Sonos being able to access the NAS, which in turn requires the NAS to be wired to the router. Of course, YMMV.

My Silenzio and NAS are both connected to a gigabit Ethernet switch. The switch and NAS sit in a back bedroom while the Silenzio is in the living room. Setup and performance is flawless. The cat6 run from the back bedroom is about 75 feet.
Love my Silenzio!

My Silenzio is in the listening room and the NAS is in an adjoining utitilty room. I did not want to hear or see the NAS.
